About 75 percent of professional soccer players in South Africa smoke dagga, parliament has heard.

But this is the least of sports organisations' drug worries, according to the authorities - because cannabis is low on the list of performance-enhancing substances.

The Deputy Minister of Sport and Recreation, Gert Oosthuizen, told parliament's sports committee that sporting and anti-doping bodies were far more concerned about the use of other banned substances, mostly in the cycling fraternity.

That won't make it legal for the players to smoke it. They need to be able to pass international drug tests, and they would be disqualified from all competition if tested positive - same applies when using otherwise legal substances. I think the state of sport in this country is in a horrendous one.

It's all about the money.

All together now, "shock shock horror horror shock shock horror"!

Obviously any kind of mind-altering substance is going to affect performance negatively. But do we see anyone up in arms about sportsmen and women using alcohol? Of course there is the small matter of dagga being (unjustifiably) illegal, but that's besides the point. There are real drugs out there there that actually do enhance performance whilst severely affecting health. So what if the soccer okes like to smoke a bit, not like they're givng themselves an unfair advantage or anything.

Excellent attitude there. Smoking dagga is illegal. End of story. This post has nothing to do with Rugby players, alcohol or anything like that.

.geek my point is that there are real dangerous drugs and real issues govt and sporting bodies should be concerning themselves with. Not little things that people have been doing since recorded history, and most certainly not things they cannot stop. To add to this, the legal/illegal distinction between alcohol and dagga is arbitrary, and rooted in capitalist economics and the politics of appearances.

People steal and rob and kill to get R's to buy drugs (dagga or whatever), drugs cause people to die (and I'm not talking about the drugs themselves, but the shady people involved in the drugs trade).

Kill someone to buy a R2 matchbox session? I doubt it.

The only reason Dagga is illegal is because of all the alcohol and pharmaceutical companies.
