Hard Hitting Broadband Advertising Campaigns

Telkom cleverly quoted MyADSL’s latest broadband research in their campaign, which states that Telkom’s DSL 384 service is the “best broadband service in SA”. “And that’s only the opinion of our biggest critics” the Telkom advertisements states

Maybe it's time to carry out a poll with more specific questions such as:

Which is the standard worldwide access for fixed location broadband?
1. DSL
2. Cellular

Does Telkom's ownership of the last mile affect DSL adversely? Y/N

Does Telkom's ownership of SAT3 affect DSL adversely? Y/N

If you had an option would you sign up for a non-Telkom DSL link? Y/N

If you had a choice would you deal solely with non Telkom related or dependent suppliers? Y/N

Does Telkom's stranglehold on telecommunications affect the offerings and or performance of potential opposition?

we should have another poll, which broadband technology is the most overpriced in za > adsl,wireless,hsdpa....etc

*looks at his clock* hopefully it will be getting even cheaper :P

This is like a blind, deaf and mute guy praising themselves
The blind guy saying he can hear the best
the deaf guy bragging about his eyesight
And the mute guy quoting some doctor that told that he had beautiful voice after he cut out the other 2 guy's tongues

so, they're competing in the advertising realm... so what? None of them are changing their prices because of this competition :(

well none of them can change theyre prices. Telkom is charging too much for international bandwidth. The ISP's already have tight prophit margins. Or so they want us to believe. Maybe they are just blaming telkom for everything...

Name of the game is to blame Telkom but it's justifiable. ISPs margins are really small and what's worse is that they have to compete with SAIX...senseless model to encourage competition.

Really? The Cellular giants can cut their prices. There is no need to profit the way they do. R2 a meg. Yeah, that's really affordable :(

ISP margins are small, but this is more from a provider perspective isn't it. Point is we have a single fixed line provider who gets away with murder. But I would have expected a lot more price competition between the wireless providers (MyWireless, iBurst, Vodacom and MTN), but yet we see none of that.

How does this sound? 128 k no capping at R 380.00 p.m ( month to month contract) and at the other end of the scale 256k - no capping @ R 900.00pm (month to month contract)

They provide the wireless infrastructure themselves but at the end they still need to connect to the internet and internationally via Telkom.

So? They still charge a lot more for the bandwidth than they should/can

All of this is 'competition' is relative. To firstly compare a wireless service (fixed OR mobile) with a fixedline service is just plain daft. The only reason this situation has come about is based on service provision and cost.

Telkom's backlog and history of poor customer service has driven consumers to look elsewhere for their telecoms needs. Because Telkom owns the infrastruture on a wholesale level and leases this out to the wireless 'competitors' the variation in cost of services provided to consumers is severly restricted.

Everywhere else in the world, fixedline telecoms far exceeds wireless / mobile solutions which makes them faster, more reliable and cheaper.

I find it sad that our local 'service providers' are trying to lure consumers in this manner. Only in an open, truly competitive environment can this be considered in the consumer's interest. Right now, it's merely a case of which one offers the best of a bad bunch. All current providers can improve coverage, quality and customer service - even though there is little they can do about price in our unbalanced telecoms environment at this stage, yet we see slow progress in this regard.
