ADSL: What’s on offer in the ISP arena?

Cybersmart Capsaver cost depends on how much you want to rollover.. 3GB the cheapest of them being R21.

I wonder how the expected ADSL regulations will affect ISP bandwidth allocations, if any changes are coming wrt it. Oh well if they drop the adsl rental bit it will already become ALOT cheaper considering SAT-3 nationalisation nxt yr.
 
Just a reminder, the uncapped offerings are normally not really uncapped. If you download 10gb or more in a 3 day period, they half your download speed till you don't exceed that then pump you back up to full download speed. Effectively throttling how much you can download a month.

Not a good idea if you have a business that needs fast reliable internet access, because you will find slow downs to cripple your business, especially if you need to send and receive email urgently.

Face it, we are being robbed left right and center, and the only thing these ISPs can do is make it as pleasant as possible...

You have to offer a plum to ISPs like Cybersmart who try to make effort to offer people affordable bandwith - albeit with some tight contract conditions.

Being offered "broadband" at 384k and paying R245 for it still wreaks of rip-off. I still can't figure out what exactly my R245 buys me since my download speed seldomly exceeds 40KB/s (320k) regardless of ISP. So in effect, I'm being defraued of 64k - and I'm not part of the 192k upgrade crowd, I've been on 384k since getting ADSL.

The best part: Telkom says is "normal" not to run at full 384k. It is however NOT normal for me to pay R200 for 320k - Telkom cuts me off and/or takes me to court.

How's THAT for catch-22..or Rip-Off-64k rather..
 
Sorry Cybersmart but paying more to download the same 3gb only faster? Is it because you think I can afford it because I might have a faster line?
 
I think statistically you have a greater % chance of using up the allocated amount maybe?
 
But it's my own choice how fast I want to reach my cap :) Nothing stops me from having a 1mb line, but limiting myself to 128kb - for which there may be valid reasons.

Paying more for the same cap because I have a faster line, is complete rubish as far as I see it

With regards to the lastest pole, if the majority think that HSDPA is the best buy. DO the Majority also think that R1,70 per MB is rather expensive.
imagine that HSDPA priced at fixed line rate,
i think we'd all get Vodacom,no?

Vodacom, the other, other two faced....telkom.

Soon, i expect the Bubble to burst, and i'm waiting

Actually I think it is because they buy speeds and sell per GB. They can fit more 384 users on into the same pipe and can therefore charge less to the 384 users.

Interesting article ... I just wish articles like these would stop overlooking the fact that we have to pay much more for UNSHAPED bandwidth. There are valid reasons for needing unshaped - and in fact only unshaped can be considered true broadband, regardless of what the cap is set at. I would like to know which ISP offers the best rates for UNSHAPED bandwidth especially for international game servers. Local will only become important once it grows and offers services and content to rival what is available overseas - but at the current costs that involves, it won't happen for a very very long time :(
