Cheapest SA broadband/internet for Web and Email?

Hi guys,

what is the cheapest broadband option in SA at the moment? Speed is not a concern and neither is high caps. Is wireless the way to go (maybe GPRS)?

Only want it for basic web traffic and mostly email.

Would appreciate any suggestions. :)
 
the cheapest isp that I know of is Cybersmart. It's R100 a month + R245 Telkom monthly fee ( excludes line rental). So it's R345 for 3 gigs a month (+rental). See the the previous post for alternatives

Thanks Squirrel, that's more in line with what I was looking for. Seems using a GPRS/EDGE phone with a data bundle add-on from Virgin would be the way to go. This would be low traffic. Would that mean I'd have to switch to Virgin mobile though for voice?

@mh348: Thanks for the suggestion - but looking for non-ADSL option for my mom who doesn't burn gigs or needs a line from Telkom (not worth it)

Peter7, I always recommend the i-Go 500 option. Buy the modem and then you only pay R299 p/m.

It works fantastically for me and 2 other people I know who have the same option. I use the internet everyday and I have only hit the cap once. (Don't install MSN Messenger).

Make sure you are zoned first.

I know speed is not that important when browsing but the 1Mb link is nice to have when updating patches on my computer or downloading 1 Mb emails from friends.

I highly recommend it

The VM option is not a contract - it is pay as you go - so it is up to you whether you want to use your phone as a phone or a modem only. That's the neat thing - you only pay for what you use - nothing more! No monthlies (unless of course you opt to finance a phone). if you are going the modem only route, then the V360 is really nice - works very well.

Doesn't look like the V360 is listed on the web anymore?

She's currently using Vodacom prepaid as her voice provider; would that mean she would have to switch to VM for voice as well to use their data service?
