"Ninety percent of SA’s gun dealers have been driven out of business and lost their livelihoods after the implementation of the Firearms Control Act, Parliament’s safety and security committee heard yesterday.

The committee was hearing representations from interested parties about a bill amending the act. The firearms industry was worth in excess of R2bn and employed thousands of people before the act came into effect. "

An our Goverment complains about not enuf jobs being created. They just killed aff a whole industry! not to mention our hunting & tourims industries that suffers from this.

Sorry but I struggle to have any pity for people who made money selling weapons...

Arms dealers have never been high on my list of nice people

Legal Arms dealers don't sell guns to criminals. They are dealers like any other shop owner, pays their taxes and provide employment to local people.

Criminals have other ways of getting guns. (ANC have something like a few tons of hidden firearms from the "struggle" still missing)

My 2 cents: the more guns out there (legal or not), the worse it is for a society.

And how do you figure that is?

It is yet to be proven that gun control reduces crime (anywhere in the world). The opposite is normally true. As soon as gun control is implemented, crime normally soars.

**Some Quotes**
:D
"Though defensive violence will always be 'a sad necessity' in the eyes of men of principle, it would be still more unfortunate if wrongdoers should dominate just men."
-St. Augustine A.D. 354-430

"If someone has a gun and is trying to kill you, it would be reasonable to shoot back with your own gun."
~ The Dalai Lama, (May 15, 2001, The Seattle Times)

"Where the choice is between only violence and cowardice, I would advise violence." ~ Mohatma Gandhi

So, you'd also be happy with boycotting the car sales industry too then? ..I mean, if you look at what South Africans in general do with cars, they definitely count as weapons - and likely kill more people per year (due to the effect of being able to slaughter en masse, none of that shooting one person at a time nonsense) than get killed by means of firearms.

90 gun offences vs. 222955 vehicle offences.

Quotes from the above article.
.He said 222 955 motorists had been fined for jumping red traffic lights..
..90 arrested for contravening the Firearms Act for pointing firearms,
shooting them in residential areas and negligence..

I think that cars is actually far more dangerous than firearms, and the same restrictions should apply to them aswell (if you wanna be so anal about restrictions!) :D

Sure, but guns have no other purpose than shooting people.

However, I'm definitely opposed to gun control. Letting a government (Def: a bunch of politicians) have all the guns is inviting authoritarianism. People should always have more guns than the idiots who "run" society.

Hardly the same thing. Now, if you asked would he be in favour of greater control over the sale of motor vehicles, that would be closer to a comparisson.

Someone that's talking some sense! :D

Guns we're originally invented as a tool, to being used for hunting & defense. (defense against other countries = war)
That's like saying cars have no other purpose than having accidents. :)
(Blame the user of the tool, not the tool itself)
A H-bomb can do nothing on it's own, someone have to press a button.

Not really - use of both are regulated and licensed by the state.

You could say they have no other purpose than shooting (full stop) but even that isnt entirely correct. The threat of a gun being used is often as effective in controlling a situation as actually taking the shot.

In fact most responsible gun owners would probably agree that shooting/killing someone is a last resort.

What's your source of that info, and why would they hide illegal firearms when they have a whole army under their control?

You also then have to regulate what cars may be sold. (example, BMW needs a special permit, since they are used in heists :D)(May not buy a V8, because it uses to much petrol)
You have to prove "need" for your car before a licence is issued so you can buy a new car. (There are taxi's(public transport), why do you want to buy a car?)

It's circular reasoning. (and money making scheme)
We have basic rights to protect ourselves, free and fair commerse, right of free choice / speech, ect.

Yeah, I shouldn't have said "shooting people"; "shooting stuff" would have been better.

In my experience, pulling out a "rollie" is about the most effective way to inflame a situation possible. Then the guy \ girl with the biggest balls wins. :p

The less weapons in circulation the better legal or not. Legal weapons just get stolen...

Ok, it's not the best example. (there are theoretically still/most of those weapons missing/hidden in caches somewhere)

Other sources :

I can't claim that legal firearms don't end up in criminals hands, but that figures are very small. (probibly a bit higher now with the flurry of criminal activity lately)

If you want to convince us, you'll have to do a little better than a letter to the Citizen and a statement by the Gun Owners of South Africa.

Sure, but guns have no other purpose than shooting people.
I'm sure the sports shooters would have something to say about that: the likes of clay pigeon shooting, (long distance range) shooting, the 'tactical' bunch, and the like. Note that NONE of the above involve killing any living thing of any kind (tho' maybe a few ants/crickets/grasshoppers end up getting it in the neck/thorax/abdomen.

However, I'm definitely opposed to gun control. Letting a government (Def: a bunch of politicians) have all the guns is inviting authoritarianism. People should always have more guns than the idiots who "run" society.
Ah, so you ARE sane :D enough to appreciate the finer distinctions after all!

That was deliberately done to point out the short-sightedness/stupidity of the argument being advanced (slow readers please note: this IS playing the ball and not the man, I'm not calling the poster stupid here)
