Owen Hargreaves is on the brink of signing for ManYoo in a £17m deal.
The England midfielder held clandestine talks with Sir Alex Ferguson at the club's Carrington training ground on Thursday morning and the Old Trafford giants are confident that a deal can be reached this weekend with Bayern Munich, Hargreaves' current employers.
'A meeting has been scheduled between officials from the two clubs in Munich on Sunday, but it emerged last night that an agreement was imminent,' says The Times. 'That meeting may still be needed to determine the structure of the fee, but there appears little doubt that the deal will proceed, given that Hargreaves has approved the terms of the five-year contract on offer.'
Having been told of Ferguson's desire to sign him two weeks ago, Hargreaves reportedly informed the Bundesliga champions that he wished to leave after returning from a post-World Cup holiday.
'Ferguson invited Hargreaves to the club's training ground yesterday morning, where he is understood to have spoken at length about taking over the role vacated by Roy Keane's departure last November. Whether Bayern had any idea about this meeting is unclear but it has become apparent that Ferguson believes he is on the verge of completing his third signing of the summer,' reports The Guardian.
'The Bayern midfielder was pictured leaving the Lowry Hotel in Manchester with an escort from the CES security firm, a company used by United.'
A partnership of Hargreaves and Michael Carrick will represent a complete overhaul of ManYoo's central midfield but the arrivals of the England duo will occur at a considerable cost. Having spent approximately £35m on the pair, Ferguson will have spent all the contents of his summer transfer kitty, ensuring that are no funds remaining with which to acquire a replacement for Ruud van Nistelrooy.
So no new striker then . I wonder how United will fair with RVN gone...A lot rests on Rooney and Saha now.
