The average income per head in SA is about R33700 a year, according to the World Bank. Tickets at the recent World Cup in Germany cost R320-R3800; few of the football-mad population could afford to see matches at such prices. Tickets to Premier Soccer League matches usually cost R25, while tickets to Manchester United’s tour of SA last month ranged from R55 to R350.

Fifa is worried that, unless action is taken, matches could be played in half-empty stadiums, which would damage the atmosphere and create a negative impression among billions of television viewers.

Well that is a predicament, considering that the city of CPT wants 4bill for a new stadium... gonna be difficult to make money if you sell tickets to the semi final at R25 each :D

Don't know if potential investors are going to go for the whole 4 bill outlay required for the new staduim, if 2010 isn't going to make at least some of that back, it's already clear that the stadium is quite likely going to operate at a loss post 2010.

How much is supposed to be covered by investors and how much by government?

Correct. The whole idea of 'bringing the soccer to the people' is bollocks cos the people that actually live here will be lucky to see any of the games, as is always the way. More reasons not to build new stadia in the townships..
