A new, luxury R1-million Mercedes-Benz S500 with a special seat for short people is waiting at a Gauteng car dealer for its new owner -- Manto Tshabalala-Msimang, Beeld reported on Friday.

The newspaper was told confidentially the vehicle would probably be delivered as soon as the health minister returned from the 16th International Aids Conference in Toronto, Canada.

The Department of Health's deputy director of ministerial affairs, Victor Khanyile, apparently ordered the car (a demonstration model) for the minister earlier this week.

The Mercedes, which has a 5,5-litre V8 petrol engine, retails at R895 000.

Informed sources said the minister had requested additional items costing R40 000, including electronically adjustable seats.

Tshabalala-Msimang apparently also asked for an infrared camera in the car's bonnet that can be activated at night to show a view of a road beyond the reach of the headlights.

She apparently requested financing for the car. Beeld's source said the invoice was in Tshabalala-Msimang's name.

Cabinet ministers receive a car allowance with which they can buy a private vehicle.

The car may not be bought as part of a state contract or tender and if the person receives a big discount, it has to be declared.

Department of Health spokesperson Charity Bhengu said the minister had not bought a new car recently. "I also don't know if she's in the process of buying a vehicle." -- Sapa

well i am sure anyone who packs and unpacks lemons, beetroot and garlic once year at international aids conferences needs to drive in style.

if it is true that she is buying this much needed car.

i wonder how many drugs for aids victims this could buy - or even better how many lemons this could buy.

pathetic. she should be fired.
 
What does our president drive tho? I keep forgetting to look when they fly past me in the centre of the lane in stand still traffic :/
 
there is new finance deals out when you pay 250k deposit on a 1mill car you can pay monthly finance of about 4k a month but i think there is a catch
 
In her defense, if she didn't buy it directly from tax-payer's money or via some 'deal', then it isn't really our concern (or the media's).

Though, if I would ever see her parked somewhere, I wouldn't mind sticking an African Potato, piece of garlic, a nice big beetroot and a lemon right up her... exhaust. :)

Another incapable driver on the roads - should be driving an Uno (seeing as she can't see over the steering wheel) - and watching tv at night? I don't think so.

You mean a mercedes for a million rand doesn't come with 'electronically adjustable' seats? What a ripoff.

Doubt she would ever drive this (does she even have a licence - maybe she doesn't need one - so few seem to)... And if she did drive it - mmmm - call that driving??!

Manto parking her new 1 million rand mercedes - ya, I can just imagine. I wonder if it has an alarm??!!

If she didnt buy it using her car allowance (which comes from tax-payers money) and bought it completely from her own money then wtf is she doing having one of her minions sorting it out for??

Doesnt he have better things to do? With over 800 people dying every day from AIDS I'd think there was something else the deputy director could be doing.

EDIT - and why a Mercedes? Surely a hearse would be more fitting.

And seriously, it's her money, she can do with it what she wants... Even though she's the one most incompetant, pathetic excuse for a human being in parliment... her and Zuma must get on like a house on fire... beetroot and showers, Africa's problems are solved!!!!!

No it's not her money. Firstly, we pay tax which contributes towards her car allowance. Secondly, ministers do not pay for petrol. Their (ministers) petrol is free (i.e. paid for by tax payers), surely then it's not right to choose a V8 petrol guzzler?

As far as incompetence goes, I think Ivy takes top honours, but she definitely enjoys a close second.

Wow. I don't earn in excess of R50k a month, have access to a fleet of chaufer driven vehicles, or a security detail. I also don't max out my car allowance on car repayments 'cos I don't get my fuel for free. cockwrench.
 
Why do they get so much..for doing so little

Salary increases for the deputy president, ministers and deputy ministers were approved by President Thabo Mbeki, according to a government gazette published on Wednesday.

The salary increases took effect from April this year.

According to the gazette, Deputy President Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka receives an annual basic salary of R736 410 and a car allowance of R184 102, giving her a total package of R920 512.

Ministers, provincial premiers, the speaker of the National Assembly and the chairperson of the national council of provinces (NCOP) receive salaries of R760 744, of which R152 149 is a car allowance.

Deputy ministers, the deputy speaker of the National Assembly, the NCOP deputy chairperson, members of the executive councils of provinces and the speakers of provincial legislatures each receive a total of R618 326 annually, which includes a car allowance of R123 665. - Sapa
