Is it still worth it to have a landline?

With Telkom again hiking the price of line rentals to R100 per month, I am wondering if it is still worth keeping my landline?

For example, for R38 per month I can get a phone and 100 off peak minutes from Cell C. Or as seen in today's paper, R105 airtime per month on MyChoice Topup 75 "bring your own phone" deal for R35 per month on MTN.
Not sure what deals VC has going.

Bottom line is, I can get a whole lot of airtime for the same price as Telkom's line rental. The Telkom Closer deal isn't great as you pay more for peak calls.
 
Is it worth it to have a Cell Phone?

In my situation I question if it is worth me having a Cell Phone? :D

I hardly use the thing as I am too **** scared to speak any length of time on my Cell/Mobile for fear of ringing up a fat bill.
Most of the time I am available on my land line if family, friends or customers need to get hold of me.

I seldom use my Cell Phone and I specify to my staff that customers must leave a land line number if at all possible.

Different needs for different customers.

My Cell Phone Bill is more than my Telkom Bill and I hardly use the damn thing. :mad:
 
Cell phone my primary source of communication, dont have landline, use wireless internet. thats about it, the only place i use landline will be @ work.
 
Well with the recent developments I would consider a landline again - seems to be the most reliable solution for now
 
As much as I dislike Telkom, I must say, a landline phonecall to London costs about the same as a local cellphone call. Telkom may be greedy bastards, but Vodacom, MTN and CellC are alot worse. I support them as little as possible.
 
Have my landline for my DSL, but the only time there's a phone on the line is when I need to call telkom to log a fault ;) Dont even own filters.

One word: fax ..specifically the sending of, as paper docs. It's dead easy to make the "other guy" foot the (scary) bill for an 0866 fax number, and by now a LOT of people now do ..but without a line to connect a fax machine to (and no, not just a PC: short of scanning a page in and then faxing from the scan, you're unable to send off that signed doc that's legally required for whatever reason) you're basically up the creek without a paddle when you have the need to send that fax.

So, depending on on whether this is important ..or you have another means to send, at the most primitive level, a fax without that landline, it may well be worth keeping a landline.

But, instead of being ripped for regular monthly (protection racket-style) line rental, consider the cost of a prepaid line: I have one and yes, while the per-second call charge may well be higher I also top it up only when I need to ..and in the long run this very much works out costing me less money per month than a postpaid/rental line would
 
I'm using an ISDN line and unfortunetly I have to use it for a fax as well...Until the Technology of communication improves I'm afraid that I'm stuck with Telkom...

Cellphones?
I really only use in Extreme Emergency cases...i.e. Family Emergencies, Stuck on the side of the road ect...

What really goes against the grain about Cellphones, are these BL***Y 'CALL ME'S',
It really P's me off when taken advantage of, I don't mind if it's an Emergency but when they want to find out what your'e doing or how's the weather, Well it's another story......And I find that I'm a sucker to have to call back on these '"Call Me's' in case it is something serious...
