From reading the article it seems to me that they're going to offer this as a trial, then introduce Triple Play. If you don't take the Triple Play it's no more 4mbps.

Let me be the first to congratulate Telkom on this decision. While there are still other issues like usage limits and cost, this is definitely a very positive move.

What is the point of triple-play with a 3gb cap?
We could have 100mb connections for all I care, but until the cap is either removed or increased to a way higher amount, I'm not even going to bother to upgrade.

Ja, let me gues, the usual, oh no this is terrible we have low caps and hate Telkom regardless of any changes etc.
Once again, If I got my speed quadrupled, id be exstatic. But i guess even you guys can actually appreciate this one a bit right?
4mb is very usefull and will just look cool if nothing else, your not even paying for it, and people routing their connections to alot of users and especially businesses will be happy.

yes, a 4mb connection, compared to what we have seen thus far, is incredible. But just what is one able to do with this connection that wouldn't eat your cap up in a matter of days? Stream live video/music? Download? Sure there is uncapped local (or is there? one of my accounts is hard capped at the moment), if it ever happens.
However, were the 4mb option coming to us with a 30gb cap, I would be on the phone to telkom requesting an upgrade right now. But what's the point of owning a ferrari if it can only hold 1lt of petrol?

While is a positive move and one in the right direction, it still serves no purpose especially if we are limited to a 3GB cap. That means you will just reach that quicker and imo 1Mb is sufficient for most day-to-day internet usage.
I had a 2mb line speed in the UK and others were offering 8Mb and more. 2Mb is more than quick enough and imho will be a for a while to come.
Will you be as exstatic when your cap is reached and you can no longer use that nice 4Mb connection?
And....the novelty will soon wear off when the cap is reached.

Serves no purpose? then i presume you are currently on the 384k adsl offering? if not, why not? since the speed is irrelevant to you?

It does serve a purpose to alot of people and you guys always complain about how slow our "broadband" is, so you cant keep complaining if they atleast fix one aspect of their product.
Now you just need the caps increase, or uncapped local. But atleast its already going to be fast enough. Plus some people do need it for routing the conenction, especially business.
And if you cant do anything with your 3gigs, then Id say 512 or even 384 is fast enough just to surf, why do you need a whole megabit just to do that?

A little insight goes a long way
so what happens if i upgrade my line now? will i also be upgraded to the 4mbps line? i'm guessing that even if i do, there'll be so many other people requesting the upgrade (backlog) that by the time they're ready to upgrade me, the trial will be over

the upgrade takes a few hours for them to do. they did it on my one line while i was holding on the phone.
