e.tv wants to launch satellite TV

Oh no!!, not more local content!!
/me looks a Scandal and Backstage, eish. I pity the fool who's actually gonna pay money to watch it.

LOL wtf is wrong with these ppl? r they daft. Y not bring it out 1 yr ago.. you could have made a killing, now theres like 5 different companies wanting to come out with it.... Multichoice must REALLY be pissing their pants.. and y does every1 assume that it will be local content? they can quite easily buy from overseas. Multichoice uses other country's satellites for some of their distribution anyways.......so there shouldnt be that assumption
 
@rendan and everyone else curious regarding this specific issue: ICASA only opened the license submissions window now. It was not previously possible to apply for such a license. That is why everyone is applying now. Other companies also applying include: BETV (Black Earth), SABC/SENTECH, Telkom, and some other private companies.

The good thing is multichoice will be getting some competition.
 
it is locally compiled channels it seems so might not be so bad....
 
I won't waste money on local content.If a new Sat provider want's to make an impact they need to broadcast programming from HBO , FOX , ABC , NBC , Universal etc.
That way we don't need to wait 4 months for Lame Choice to rebroadcast the shows from these providers.
I don't have a Lame Choice sub and propably never will , because there is no way that I will pay R420 a month for the 5 worthy channels that they do have.
I have 3 Sat dishes pointing to the sky and DSL for the rest of the content I can't get via satellite.
Hopefully one of these new local TV operators will get it right by 2020.

Yip I understand but personally I would much rather watch something in high definition than pay a fortune for a satellite service which only has a few decent channels.

Point being that E-tv rather concentrate first on it's existing offering before moving over to satellite. Multichoice already have semi-decent content, e-tv doesn't.
 
I understand your point regarding HDTV but from the 19000 TV channels being broadcatsed over the world only 92 of them are HD.I think DVB-Terrestrial and DVB-Cable are leading the way in HD content at the moment.
Recieving HDTV via satellite would require a new HDTV compatible reciever.
 
On Pas12 there is only a couple of sport(Currie cup rugby , boxing , golf) and SABC news feeds.Pas 7/10 have the usual SABC 1,2,3,ETV,BTV and also some Telemedia sport feeds (rugby , soccer).
On Eutelsat W3A there is some French channels and streaming video including MBC 1 & 2 , Hit Channel Italy & Fashion TV.I don't understand a word of French anyway.
On Telstar12 there is NBC Universal and ABC feeds.Last night I watched some of the MTV Video music awards feed.Then there are some "other" channels on Telstar12 that can be viewed with the right equipment.For this you should rather do your own research because it might be risky talking about it in a public forum.
Most of these feeds do not run 24/7 and you will need a decoder that can handle symbol rates below 2 Msymbols/s.It will also help if you have a reciever that can do a "Blind Scan" in search for those hidden frequencies.

Hehe, funny enough, my father grabbed one of those wide screen tv's to test the pixelation/resolution etc for DSTV and DVD's.DVD's played great, however with DSTV, seems only a select few channels are perfect quality, the rest come out as pixelated as space quest on me old 384, ergghhh, some digital broadcasting, seems they broadcast analog through digital or sumin :confused:
 
At the moment Botswana TV has the best video bitrate of all the local channels and beats SABC & DSTV channels in video quality.
 
Frankly, I don't care what channels all these new "players" have, had dstv for a while and could NEVER find anything worth watching while at home, i have VIVID now because it was in the house i moved into, and it stayed...

Also, i don't give a **** what content they offer if they don't fall in line with international rates... under R100 anyone?

I doubt you'll get anything for under R100...hell, check what you get on DStv Compact for R200.:o
