Telkom ADSL Premium Combo Router Problems

hello,

i recently got a "Telkom ADSL Premium Combo" router. i had the ADSL USB Pots modem, Anywho my internet is working fine! it is just that i seems a i cannot open ports on the router for programs to work (torrents, steam, msn messenger! ). i then added every port to the list (from "0" to "65535") the programs seems to work. I could log on to msn and stream etc. ECXEPT, i when i try download "utorrent" says my router is blocking/slowing down my speeds and i must open a port! i get terrible speeds 2-5 kbs maybe connect to like 10 peers!

please! i need someone who knows this router to help me out! thanks
 
Have you checked any firewall you might have on your PC?

I'm not familiar with the Telkom ADSL Premium Combo router but are you forwarding the open ports to the right IP? Have you tried putting the pc into the DMZ?

yeah, thats why i really need someone that knows the router, i am not familiar with routers, but it appears on this router one can foward the ip to any address! and DMZ is?

**i mean when the field is left '0.0.0.0' it goes to "any"**
 
The DMZ is basically excluded from any firewall protection. Everything that wants to get to the specific machine gets to that machine without interference.

I'd turn off DHCP and manually assign a IP to the computer, then specify that computer's IP in the port forwarding in place of 0.0.0.0
 
I dont think its too clever to leave your entire PC open on all ports with no firewall.

Also your torrents probably suck because they are shaped, mostly. And why use torrents in such a bandwidth deficient country? Well im not even going to try figh that one as everyone seems set on using torrents.
 
ya but i am not talking about just torrents. all i wanna do is open a port plz so i can use it in future and for torrents (sa hub etc)


and dont be hating bwana v.16 was on his way to helping me...

anywho bwana v.16 i disabled DHCP server. but it still says the port is not open (port 1000)

The rational behind putting the pc in the dmz was to test if port forwarding was the culprit. Putting the computer there is little different than running the router in bridged mode anyway which is basically what he was doing with the old usb modem.

Because of the earlier usb modem I'd also be curious as to what software firewall had been used and if that had been taken into account.

Ok - youve disabled DHCP and manually assigned the ip address to the computer? On my router its a case of assigning the Public port to the lan port of a specific IP.

Easiest way would be if you knew who made your modem. Then you can find router specific instructions at portforward.com

okey, i did that!!! sigh it neva worked!! my router is a little more complex then their example!!! does n't anyone have the same router as me? anyone got anymore ideas???
 
Sorry - without knowing the modem model I cant do much more than generalise. :o
 
Im shure there will be the model number somewhere on the router itself or in its settings, try loking for it and then use portforwad.com, if they dont have it, no one does.

Oh, and bwana, I didnt really mean DMZ, I was talking more about him adding every port to the list, just wondering if he left it that way for it to work.
 
i looked on portforward.com and it is not there!!! does now one else in the whole entire world have this router?
 
I had a look at that router and could never fully getting the NAT and portforwarding working correctly.
But as with most other routers, just enable the bridge and you wont have to worry about forwarding ports. It should help your problem...
 
Just in case you HAVE WindowsXP.....Turn the ROUTER'S protection/firewall off ( You DO have a firewall on your XP which you can just ENABLE, if not enabled yet )...Go to the webpage/homepage of the torrent/p2p youre using and enter the port that THEY say you must enable, in the firewall ( xp's firewall ) under "Exeptions"...itll work..I know its risky to have your firewall of the router turned off, but you already have a firewall ( presumingly ) on your XP...Once youre finished with whatever you want to do, just enable the routers firewall again...;)
It'l work....trust me....This is the easiest way i can think of...You dont need 2 firewalls if you only have 1 pc.....its just extra precaution

sigh, i have enabled the port that the torrent uses on the firewall, i even tried turning the firewall off (on the router and in XP)

Ok you need to go into WAN under CONFIGURATION.
Then edit your current connection, and change the ATM protocol to RFC 1483 Bridged.
And thats it, save the configuration
Then create a broadband dialup connection through Windows New Connection Wizzard, opt1, opt2, opt2 again... viola
