I broke my dvd writer...

Kinda walked into the tray while it was open and then it got stuck. I opened up the drive n snapped the tray back into place on the rails. The tray moves in and out manually without any problem and the cogs move with it.

The problem comes in when i power on my pc and try open it, the cogs spin twice but the tray just stays closed. The weird thing is that the cogs seem to spin in the direction that closes the drive. So its as if it doesnt no the drive is closed and the tray is beyond the point where its rail is in contact with the cogs.

I wonder if that makes any sense :o

Wat do i do with it? Bin it? The drives only a few months old :(
 
I'd say chuck it. Drives are cheap as dirt nowadays so consider yourself lucky that you didn't do more damage ;)
 
the is a small hole on the front plate of your DVD writer, while the pc is off shove a paper clip into that hole - it will force the tray to eject. pull the try out to its full extent and then turn the pc on.
it should pull the try back in automatically and work fione from there.
give it a go.
 
thanks, tried it.. the drive closed but is still a few mm open. I think i did a bit more than just move the tray off the rail. Ill fiddle around a bit more... but expecting this one to be binned :(
 
Drives go for a mere R450 now, do yourself a favour and get a new one.

sounds like the tray has slipped a few teeth and isnt lining up anymore
well if you gonna toss it - go ape-**** with it.
if its still a few mm's open, pull the tray open again and then shove it back in fast and with force - it may just jump a few teeth back into position.
what have you got to loose...

Thanks for the pricing guys, got this drive (the one i broke) from matrix for R375... same LG one. Ill pop back in their to see wat they got. When i got this one i actually went their looking for the sony they had for the same price. Hopefully they have it again
