Anyone tried to set up their own mail server?

I am trying to setup a mail server on my Linux Box (Ubuntu 6.06 LTS)
I am using the Axigen mail server (www.axigen.com) and I am reciving all my mail but I am having problems with sending and after contacting axigen and doing a bit of problem solving we came to the conclusion that its a problem with my ISP (telkom) not the software.

So when I try to send to gmail it works and when I try to send to telkomsa.net is does not (says no route to host in the log file) all the correct ports are open etc. and it does send, but only to some hosts.

Any ideas?

I am no expert. When I set up my own mail server on my IS-provided fixed IP using Mercury on Windows XP, much the same happened. It turned out that some mail servers do a reverse-lookup on your IP, so I got IS to add the lookup ( numeric IP to domain name ), which they did quickly and happily for me. It solved the problem. Seems to be part of the universal anti-spam-war. You might look into that.

Sounds like you are using MX to resolve hosts, I would relay via your upstream mail server (send via smtp.saix.net) - this is more reliable. Are you trying to host pop services on the web side? I would recommend against this as dynamic IP's can create havoc on SAIX network...
 
Basically Axigen takes care of everything, pop, imap, smtp IN, smtp OUT

I use a webmail interface that comes with the package, and is does send, but only to some hosts
 
There are two ways to setup smtp

1. Use MX Direct
2. Using an SMTP Relay/smart host

eg - If you on a SAIX backbone use smtp.saix.net as your smtp relay
