But Mbeki - who said at a similar meeting a year ago that high tariffs were inflating the cost of doing business in Africa's biggest economy - said the government had so far failed in its mandate to lower tariffs.

"When I make a phone call or use the internet no-one sends me the bill but we have not made the sort of dent in the cost that we would have wanted to 12 months ago," he told a media briefing after the meeting on the edge of Kruger National Park.

"It remains a matter of disatisfaction that the cost element is too high ... It is a matter of urgency."

Its a matter of ineptitude funded by greed. STFU Thabo, we don't want to hear about your failings, fire IVY and while you are at it fire that toad Manto.

ACTION > WORDS

So, we all know Ivy doesnt listen. In some countries it would be called treason - here its business.

EDIT -
"Unbundling the local loop is not something we can just do today," she told Reuters on the sidelines of the briefing.
No, how about tomorrow then? Ya just dont want the gravy train to end.

they should actually send him the bill...maybe that is where they are failing.

telkom: hey, dude, pay up or we go seize your new shiny house imminently
mbeki: ivy, take that doughnut out of your mouth and come see me in my office pls.

Mbeki reminds me of a jack in the box. You get it for your birthday by a relative you don't like. You watch it pop out of the box a few times. Get bored and stuff it into your closet. And every now and then when rummaging through your cupboard this f$%^&ing annoying thing jumps out at you and you get all mad and stuff, and then chuck it back into the cupboard. But otherwise, besides for the rucus and huge annoyance, it is all pretty harmless, and you can just go on. Mbeki is a Jack in the box - every few months he jumps out of his box, makes a noise, then quietly retreats again.

@President Mbeki.
2 Things.

1. Retire or Fire Ivy. We really don't care any more what happens to the old girl. Just get rid of her by any means possible.
2. Tell your National Assembly to make sure Debbie Love is on the short list of ICASA Candidates.

These 2 things will help change the landscape of Telecoms in South Africa and will have the desired effect quicker than making statements that we have heard about already.

And make me stop rumours that Mbeki is indeed a joker in a box :)

Heard it before and will hear it again....

One day something will change.... It will happen suddenly and without warning. Then Telkom will **** themselves ;)

horrific - bit like the clown urban legend.

'nuff said.

mnnn thinking about that quote and what werner said,,,,

maybe we should all send uncle Thabo and auntie Ivy our telecoms bills en masse, every month, as it's quite apparent that they are so detached from society they don't have a bloody clue what their procrastination is costing this country.

Well step 1 is good, he acknowledges that the gov has failed. + 5 points
step 2 is the problem.. if he again does nothing drastic like firing ivy or something then its - 95 point. He has to stop talking and actually force in one way or another change cause too many are riding the gravy train that he again has acknowledged

Again Thanks Mbeki, Talk and no action, as usual, maybe the speach was delayed as it is now to late again! You had your chances and blew it with the latest new telecoms laws implemented! You will be unofficially dubbed the official international loud mouth (as you are never at home or take part in national affairs) as your legacy!

I wonder if Mbeki has thought about what he wants to be remembered for after his two terms? If I were him I would want to be remebered for pulling a plug on skycraper telco prices and for my contribution towards HIV/AIDS eradication. This is where I'd choose to win South African public and impress my international peers. Somehow for both important jobs(lack of better phrase) he's got non-performing ministers working hard to turn it into plagues.

This is actually not a bad idea and it could be done quite cheaply (cost of two stamps and a little bit of time). One copy to the president's office and one copy to the DoC. Highlight the ridiculous amount that individual's have to pay for telecoms.
