And if this happens, only then I will contemplate on getting Telkom's 'fraudband' again.
 
Look i'm very happy with my adsl connection. It is by far the most stable of all the options i tried 3g and sentech. now if only we could get higher caps i'll be quite a happy camper. Prices IMO is goverments fault as they are dragging their feet on deregulation and lining their pockets with telkom profits.
 
Telkom's claim that there is really no cap is technically true.

Local bandwidth has always contributed towards the cap. Magically when you reach 3Gb they're suddenly able to tell the difference between local and international. Up to that point they're apparently indistinguishable.

Telkom has been stealing from the public since 2001, the year they massively escalated their local call charges. They're going to have to do a lot to make up for 5 years of raping and pillaging. When Telkom just drops the access charge, then we can give them some credit. When they drop the per gigabyte cost to R5 or less, then we can give them some credit. And that credit will only be due if they do these things right away, not 50 years from now.

What they mean is that you can run out fuel that much faster. You'll never make your destination because your new car is a petrol hog.

I'm sure their competitor will offer the same and I'll still switch. The only way Telkom will get to keep me as a customer in the longterm would be to refund the money they've stolen over the last 5 years.
 
The cap vs upgrade debate is best summed up by one user: “I don’t see why anyone would complain about this. If you drive an Audi A4 and the dealer says ‘bring it in we’ll swop it for an Audi S4’. Sure, you must still stay under 120km/h on the highway, but you can get there a whole lot faster and it now has some nice extra features.”

Wtf? If the speed limit is 120km/h, regardless of which car you're driving... Audi A4, Audi S4, Koenigsegg CC ... if you can only go 120km/h, you're going the same SPEED! That's the dumbest comparison I've ever seen. Dumb.

I don't know why you didn't see this, but the cap actually represents distance. You can only go 3000 kilometers but you can go as fast as your car can take you. You'll get there in a shorter time.

Now this just really gets me goin. I get so pissed off wen i hear things like this, even tho its speculation it most probably will be true. Telkom cud probably offer us the same connections as those telecoms do overseas but only wen they are threatened, by a new young telecoms i might add that will most likely not pose a huge threat, do they start gettin their act into gear.

What the author also completely ignores is that 'free' speed upgrades are an international norm. People overseas who were on 1mbps ADSL 6 years ago are now on 8mbps (or higher) for the same price (or lower).

I agree with noxibox, if I drive an Beetle with a top speed of 40kph and then upgrade to an Audi with a top speed of 160kpm, the fact that you can still only drive 3km's before you have to pay more cash makes the upgrade largely irrelevant. If anything, it puts more money in Telkom's pockets when users have to buy more milage after 1 week, rather than 2...

Thats my thinking to. Look at the Telkom closer options, they could have offered those years ago and saved us a wak in call charges, but now that Neotel is on the horizon they offer those options.:mad:
 
I also find higher speeds with the same cap ludicrous. Having such a low cap completely defeats the purpose of broadband. Reach the cap sooner, spend more on bandwidth? And how many people are on 1mbit lines? If you have 384 or 512 nothing changes (yet - apparently there are rumours that 512 will get bumped to 1mbit).

The comment about Telkom lowering their prices when Neotel (or any other competition) offers ADSL is not surprising. That is the whole point behind introducing competition. And in that respect government has failed us in bringing in the competition four years late, and of course all the other issue, like local loop, poor regulation etc.

That said, I think that in the consumer sector, Telkom has done enough damage to their image (amongst informed individuals) that even if they end up with better deals they will lose huge market share. I know I will switch.

It said in the article that folks on 512 would get bumped up to 1mb at no extra cost right ? Would this be a trial ? Can anyone shed any light on this for me please . It would be nice , the 192 peeps are now on 384 the 1mb peeps are on 4mb even though it is a trail but the 512's are left with nothing new :mad:
 
Our ADSL in SA is pathetic compared to almost anywhere else in the developing and developed world, so NO, telkom sucks.
 
Kabal - Its just a rumour - which they think is true - but since Telkom knows the rumour is out - we'd have to see if it comes true or not.

As for the 30gig thing - Yea whatever, Telkom stole my stash and smoking it IMO!.
 
Is it just me - or is Telkom trying to make us look like a bunch of Ungratefuls!?
 
wonderful, we must appluad Telkom for bringing in faster lines when they can easily do better + charging us pure profit for the luxuary of having it. Because thats the way it is marketed and priced.. broadband in SA is a luxuary. :(
 
Yet another largely pointless article that prefers to sit on the fence, if the writer had stated that Telkom was trying but largely missing the mark then perhaps it wouldve made better reading. The fact remains the quality of service we pay for, installation times + cost + service levels + value for money = rubbish. Rand for Pound for Dollar for Rupee or whatever, the product the public is paying is below standard and over priced, and please dont give me that rubbish about not comparing us to other "more advanced" countries. The government and Telkom have both had long enough to prepare, both have failed. End Rant :mad:
 
But what use is speed with a cap

While the upgraded speed is definitely a positive move by Telkom, as long as they have this capping policy in place (or have bandwidth being so expensive), it is really not an effective solution.

All that happens now is that you can use up your monthly cap four times as quickly!
 
At the moment i have to remain extremely disciplined to stick to my cap for a month. I personally hope that until the caps are increased that I don't get a speed upgrade. Obviously Telkom should be increasing speeds, but an many have said before, what's the point if we're stuck with the same pathetic caps, we'll just reach them faster.
 
I need to ask something, the local capping that has been gazetted, is that only for telkom, or does that apply to all forms of "broardband", only reason why I ask, is that I am with a wireless isp, and want to know if they must comply to this as well?
 
lol, I love the word "free" there, lets see, last year I paid Telkom more than 20 000 for the same ADSL that will cost you in most developing countries about 4 000 or so

as far as i am concernbed these are money stolen from me, money that could've been put into good use but instead went to a pathetic company that has NO idea what business is about

so, nope, I'm not impressed, that's like throwing 5 cents to a homeless person and then brag the whole year how much you've done for the poor
