Number portability won’t reduce call rates

What is the point of mnp? if you don't like being at provider A you can leave for provider B but you have to pay provider A for the remainder of your contract!? and of course sigh a new deal with provider B!

O wait you get to keep your number at a high price?!

What is so difficult to understand? The point is so simple - you get to choose the best deal and keep your number, rather than weighing up the benefits of a good deal versus the hassles of changing numbers.

So according to this story there isn't going to be a price war, but instead we're going to see a price war?

MNP will reduce call rates. Consumers will move to the cheapest provider if it's easily doable. Their customer service is all equally crappy so the differentiator will be extras offered with accounts, and call charges.

I would change.. busy looking at other packages at the moment.

I'm with MaD on this, even though it won't directly impact call rates, if you're fed up with Vodacom or CellC or MTN, you can move to either network without the difficulty of changing numbers with it.

I for one might consider moving to either competitor from MTN, but MTN has not given me a reason to move. Watching my friend phone Vodacom support and literally be on hold for an hour or listening to my other friend moan how CellC fcuked up his free minutes for a year and only getting a "we're working on it" makes me believe (that even though I'm probably paying more) I'm with the best network atm.

Oh, and please note, I'm with MTNSP directly and not through some crappy reseller. I can tell you horror stories...

Yay for portability! This will make the networks sit up and listen to their clients (hell, answering a support call within 2 minutes would be awesome start *nudge vodacom nudge*)

Ive been paying inflated fees since Febuary and not upgrading my contract waiting for exactly this moment in time. I will certainly be looking around. How wonderful if IU can switch to maybe VIrgin and be on a month by month poay for what you use contract. Whichever way it goes I too think that prices will drop, Hell Ill swop for a few free mins or a few cents off calls. I maybe call support 1 or 2 times a year so price is the determining factor for me .

Taylor did mention that there would be a discount war. Wasn't too sure what the difference is between this and a price war but I'm assuming customer can expect better packages and add-ons but not overall call rate reductions.

I've written another article about the reasons people wll move, around 48% agree with you. It will be because of price.

So my feeling is that MNP will have very little effect unless we do see a bit of price war or discount war or whatever it is they want to call it :D.

Also think there may be porting issues come 18 Sept as service providers haven't had a chance to do a live test on the networks yet.

Well, being a myadsl user Ill be thrilled about that as I live to complain ;)

I cant see many people changing because of price only, unless it is drastically less.

Think of all the billing hassles. Having to phone new numbers to resolve issues. I'm sure its not just going to be a matter of telling provider A you wanna be on B without any hickups.

I'm with MTN, and must say I've never had any issues with them. I recon service is the key factor. I'll rather spend a little more, but know that when i have a query it will be resolved quickly.

I am with MTN (PAYG) and I never phone them, have no reason to, and am looking for the best deal.

It doesnt have to reduce call rates (though I hope it will) to save you money. My calling habits are such that switching to Virgin from Vodacom is going to save me at least r100 per month. That's reason enough to switch, isnt it?
