Telecoms: let the market decide

Yup, good read.

Telkom is in control of telecoms in SA, not Thabo and his mates, they just think they have control.

In 1994, the ANC adopted a policy of "managed liberalisation". The idea was that telecom companies needed to be sheltered from competition to secure their investment in new infrastructure. But managed liberalisation has achieved little. Tariffs have not come down. Government policy has shielded incumbent operators - especially Telkom - from the dictates of the free market.

President Thabo Mbeki has again lamented SA's high telecommunications prices and said urgent action was needed to address the problem.

Stop talking about it again and again and again.............

Do something about the situation and open it up to anyone who wants to run a telecoms business.

as I said before it is the government's own doing that the telecoms sector has stagnated like a biach!

My opinion is that everyone in the ANC is scared to death of each other, Thabo included. They are scared that if they stand up against self-enrichment, corruption etc for what is right, then they will get a 'conspiracy' going against them to have them removed from their particular office. So basically what I am saying is that Thabo doesn't have the guts to stand up against the Minister of Communication or the Minister of Health for that matter.

All they can do is make token comments about the sad state of Telkom every now and then to appear like they concerned, but are too Chicken-**** to actually do what is necessary....fire their sorry asses.

You guessed wrong. The Gov's plan has backfired on themselves. Yes they get oodles of cash from it, but the catch 22 is now how to put a noose on Telkom without curtailing the massive dividends that they have come to enjoy and scare off investors.
So they get another half arsed scheme going like making Sentech a broadband saviour for all (helps that they own 100% of that to)

Actually if any of these people had any decency they would resign - on principle - and not drag Thabo through the mud due to their failures (or even his.) If Thabo says something (telco is too expensive) - and they don't deliver - they have failed and should resign - instead of making Thabo repeat himself endlessly.

Just one more shirking of responsibility - while they get fat off their government salaries paid by the tax payer (few of those that there are.)

This is a fallacious argument. It is in protected markets that the digital divide is in fact at its widest. It is no coincidence that SA's cellular companies, which operate in a competitive environment, have signed up millions of rural customers, whereas Telkom, which has been shielded from competition in key areas, has seen its subscriber base stagnate, and confined to wealthier suburbs.

Telkom/ANC

it is great that Thabo recognises the problems of the telecommunications industry, but last time i checked he was the president of SA and in charge of the government that controls Telkom.

Until they force something upon Telkom nothing will ever change. all the critisicm of Telkom slides off there back like water off a ducks back.

The only think that makes Telkom tick is money. impose fines on them if they dont comply to new regulations. something that will make them open up there eyes a bit.

otherwise the telecommunications of this country will remain the same. IN ONE BIG SHAMBLE.
 
It’s simple; government has no interest in tightening the reigns on Telkom. It’s not in their interest, plain and simple. If Thabo and the boy’s wanted things cheaper they wouldn’t have to invest in things like Sentech, or put pressure on The DoC or shake up ICASA. All they would have to do is tell Telkom to lower prices at the next board meeting; they are shareholders after all.
It would be that simple, no research necessary, no cost analysis or public input to be brought forward at the next ICASA hearing. Just tell the CEO of the company that you own 40% of; “do your job, check your costs, and lower your pricing accordingly…” It’s that simple in my mind.

But Thabo doesn’t want to, because then they won’t get all the nice money!

Once again; simple!

Yup they all getting fat.. all in the way of supposive greater good. yet many remain poor. Anyways thats off point. The problem is this Thabo needs to get some balls and fire the lot of them.

Heck he can make it his clean up campeign. I mean i don't support the anc, but if he were to suddenly trash all those who are double dealing and ****ing up this country i'd vote for them.

But right now its just the usual talk about how things could be and should be but its like he is not prepared to take the necessary action required. And so his term as president will be stained due to his ineffectual stance with ministers that don't produce what they should.
 
(Just another point) Thabo is never in the country - he seems to think things run on auto-pilot while he's jetting constantly around africa - sorting(?) their problems - never mind our own. He has no clue what goes on - he is never here. (And he doesn't pay a phone bill.)

I mention this in relation to the UK - where/Maggie Thatcher shut down the mining strike - or John Major led the charge against inflation (both reasons for the strength of the pound today) - The fight against inflation included high telco costs, excessive salaries - and productivity. And Major and Blair going into the liberalisation of BT and the opening of the market - all parties in partner with each other... We have a regulator, gub is a 40% stakeholder - so ultimately these officials - including telkom (being the key) - are ignoring the president (whether he performs or not - he has given direction.)

They are all failing - telkom should have an interest in the future of the country - plain fact: every year telkom has raised prices - this year - for the first time ever - they lowered prices - against the inflation rate (for us) - but ultimately - in the way they do their sums - we end up paying more and they end up with greater profits (and the country ends up poorer - us, much poorer - especially in terms of dsl costs elsewhere in the world.)

I don't understand it - why doesn't telkom give us costs in line with world dsl prices (and we'd all shut up and be happy campers?) - and especially as we are supposedly such a small amount of the profit mix?

Either mbeki speaks with a forked tongue; they are all failing (including telkom - as much a citizen of this country as anybody else) - or they are all complicit and therefore liars.

Whichever way - I wish we had a president - instead of this forever missing person (who actually lead the country.)
