Well I have my BoPL connected and running, will over the next few days give you the run down.

Telkom HTTP = Your line speed is approximately 913 Kbps or 111.9 kBytes/sec

Iburst Speed Test (Down) = 421 kbps
Iburst Speed Test (Up) = 755 kbps
IBurst Round Trip = 41ms

Speed Test London (Down) = 182 kbps
Speed Test London (UP) = 507 kbps
Speed Test London avg Ping = 416ms

Speed Test London (Down) = 1145 kbps
Speed Test London (UP) = 281 kbps
Speed Test London avg Ping = 487 ms

SpeakEasy Speed Test (New York) Down = 382 kbps
SpeakEasy Speed Test (New York) Up = 489 kbps

Ping www.google.com = Minimum = 419ms, Maximum = 469ms, Average = 445ms
Ping www.myadsl.co.za = Minimum = 77ms, Maximum = 1081ms, Average = 444ms
Ping www.telkomsa.net = Minimum = 43ms, Maximum = 206ms, Average = 132ms

As you can see, a real mixed bag. It is free so I can not complain but I think I might be plugging my DSL back in :/

It would be interesting to see these tests performed after hours...

Well, 913 Kbps sounds pretty amazing. ADSL doesn't fair much better does it?

I asked and they are only testing around 20 people through this sub station at the moment. I might have a didgy connection cause she thought she might need a repeater.

Well, I don't know about his hey.... Online stream at 64kbps stops and starts making it un-usable. I can't access it to enable forwarding for bittorrent either. So far impressions are not good. For a free service it is great. For a family checking mail and browsing but anything more than that is rubbish. I have only had it for about an hour so this really is "first impressions"

James how about some tracerts so we can see where ethekwini is getting its bandwidth from.

also would give an idea if that jitter is from the BoPL component or the upstream provider.

Will do. Pitty it is at work and not home so will only be able to do it on Monday

Here are 2 Tracert's for you. Can some one who knows there stuff disect these and let me know where they are getting their bandwidth from.

I wonder how is the Pretoria one coming along ?
As per email received from them 5 September :
On the status of expanding the offering
GOAL said:
Thank you for your email. We are unfortunately not able to predict the areas we are to expand to, its still rather premature for that. If you agree, I will store your details and inform you of when we are in your area.
and in response to how it's going in the east of Pta
GOAL said:
The BPL areas in the eastern suburbs are being finalised and tested for pilot testing, so its all going well thank you

I don't know about GOAL.

They are not answering my mails, nor have they provided any real information. They have missed two self made deadlines and still no new communication...

I hope all is well there...

Patiently awaiting some real news

so where does that bandwidth come from

@ Daveogg

The tracert's are ready and waiting!

Oh gosh i am no expert at this but it looks like IS as your upstream provider.

The sad thing about those tracerts is that you are getting a lot of variation of latency(jitter) on the first ping - which would suggest that BoPL may not be that great for gaming or voip. Prehaps just early days.

Well I tested with torrents bounce around a heap but I would say average around 15-20 down and 20-25 up. I used tried streaming audio from over seas again and it looks a heap better, only dropped to re-buffer once.

As it is a work machine, sadly can't test gaming for u. I did VNC into the machine and the torrent speed did not seem affected by after hours. I did a few IP look-ups and well I can not be 100% it does look like ISNET for bandwidth.
