Neotel to ‘Bring the Internet to South Africa’

Sounds very promising. It's great to have a global player in the local market. Telkom can hardly compete with a Tier 1 Provider :P.
 
Sounds good, does this mean that they won't have to be fighting over landing rights and stuff by having this POP in joburg?
 
Sorry for sounding pessimistic here, but how will they establish this global presence if not through SAT-3 (Telkom) or EASSy? This could take years to accomplish.

Tata is a co-owner of SAT3 - but can't land until telkom open the box at melkbos (in April) - unless telkom loses the keys - like their share register - and the original sat3 illuminati document.

Or maybe they'll just cut the cable far out at sea - if we can't provide it - no one else will - telkom will huff and puff - then bring in the legion of lawyers.
 
Once again. I'll try to be optimistic and expect these things to come true...quickly.

and little results.

Neotel is promising - but results visible to me and you yet.

I'll believe it when I have a reliable Neotel service installed at a realistic rate.
 
I dont think anyone can expect miracles from Neotel and there definitely wont be an overnight remedy to the current telecoms situation, but at least Neotel have there head in the right place give it a year or two and im sure we'll definitely have seen some awesome improvement.
 
I like the idea of them just sailing out 100 meters and cutting into SAT-3 then creating their own landing station :)

Telkom will think they can tie them up in court but Tata as more money than them and will win a court case... Telkom will realise this :)...

I don't think they mean providing service for cheaper but probably for area's not serviced by Telkom. I mean almost every time the guy makes these nice statements and then says 'But initially' or 'approaching' or 'no price war' etc make me think he is riding the media hype that they can currently get by claiming it will be alot cheaper. Wait tll it comes out and then we just gonna get the usual bs.

Dont paint the whole of Africa with that brush - look at countries like Kenya and Mauritius who are actually doing something.

No, this is SA's government screwing the pooch yet again.

As mentioned the sno has more SAT3 available than telkom - the gov just wont let them land it. Gotta protect the cash cow for as long as possible.
 
In simpler terms, a large amount of Internet content will now sit directly on the Neotel-VSNL network, effectively bringing the Internet cloud to South Africa and eliminating the need for a two tier process for ISPs to reach ‘the Internet’.

I'm not sure I know what this means. Are they planning on caching the whole internet on huge servers locally? :D

They are starting to blur the lines between 'local' and 'international' internet. I like what I hear. This takes a lot of control that Telkom still have over local internet out of their hands. ICASA is going to have to refine their definition of 'local' vs. 'international' bandwidth.
 
I like what I'm hearing from Neotel I must say. Of course as has been pointed out countless times, talk is cheap.

This sounds a lot like they're wanting to remove the neccesity for ISPs to go through someone like Telkom to get hold of bandwidth. This would be huugely welcome I think.
