EU urged not to jeopardise security in Vista row

The EU has a point, however Security features should be able to be turned off should one wishes to use other software.
 
Erm, I'm sorry I don't buy the EU's argument.
It's not Microsoft's' job to keep security companies in business.
The whole idea is rather daft. It's like saying we must keep crime alive so that we can maintain a police force. From complaints that MS operatign systems are security risk to now wanting Microsoft to back off it's safety measures is insane.

THE EU has always had issues with MS and this is just another way for them to stick it to MS. I say let the people decide. Why must I buy Norton Internet Security for Vista, when Vista already has a better protection system?
 
So if MS must do it Apple and all Linux distro's must do it as well.

The EU's argument sucks.

What must they do? I cant think of any examples in the OsX arena that even come close to what microsoft is doing.

Remove all security aspects of the OS, root's password should become "password" and they should not let the user change it :D

their arguement is very valid in my opinion

microsoft already controls the OS market by some way

now if they do all their own security

how many companies are going to go bang?

microsoft will just kill off companies left right and centre

wont be good for the world as a whole

i mean imagine i did my own garden cleaned my own house etc i would not need a maid or gardener

now if everyone did that in this country how many ppl would loose out?

They're talking about bundled pre-installed products not security features.
The commission argued that the product could not be launched in Europe with pre-installed programs that are sold automatically in the system's package.

BTW - In osx the root user isnt enabled by default.
 
No that's not the same thing. You can't equate being lazy to developing security software. Microsoft doesn't have to keep anyone in business. And like i said by the same argument, we could argue that we need crime to keep the cops employed.

They're absolutely crazy. Microsoft didn't grow to this size overnight. They all watched it and did nothing, now all of a sudden it's a problem that they want to make their product good. So Windows was okay when it sucked and had thousands of exploits? :/

If they go out of business, so they must, should I now as the end user be forced to support a company who makes software that I don't need nor do I want? If it's charity they want, they must say so and we'll deposit lose change into tins for them, but they can't strong arm MS into leaving security holes in their OS so they can make money.

what a moronic argument. How about they make software I do want, then I'll give them money. If they make a Game I'll give Symantec money, oh they don't make those, "Then they must F***OFF!" I'm not going to make a donation by force.

I think the EU knows more about Microsoft than most people, the fact is MS creates software that intrudes in your face, just like when SP2 came out and that darn security alerts popped up, it almost took me 5 minutes to figure out where to switch off the built in firewall and security alerts :D They want to avoid the same thing but on a broader scale, if microsoft bundles firewall AV and AntiSpyware in Vista it will be a huge step forwards and backwards, because the novice users will be slightly protected, but the advanced users will be slightly ticked off, because they have to disable a few features before enjoying the product. So they can choose to have it in a clear option in the installation ;) IMHO
 
yes but by forcing ppl to use their security features is what the problem is

thats the whole point. they want it left out, does not make the OS any worse

all they want is for ppl to have a choice and not force their crap on us

although windows does rawk :)

why should I care about the gardener or whatever? I even wash my car myself nowadays, because at the end of the day I waste the same amount of time as going to car wash, and I do it properly, unlike the retards at the car wash that will wipe the tyers and the windows with the same cloth ... it all comes down to what you get for your money, I wouldn't mind paying for something that adds value and frees up my time, but when the alternatives are not up to the quality required, no thanks, I don't care about them!

About security, I expect an operating system to come with all tools necessary for security protection right out of the box! This stupid argument about MS shipping extra products with their OS and killing the market are absolute rubbish! First of all, Linux comes with even more tools out of the box, yet I don't hear anyone complaining about Linux killing the business of the other companies! It is all about people being lazy and jaleous! If I can get good quality product for cheap, why would I pay more for something with inferior quality? If any company is afraid from MS taking their business, the answer is simple: produce better quality product, competitively priced, and you certainly will get lots of business, otherwise STFU!
 
I have only one problem with that last statement. Fact is Linux would probably own the market if windows did'nt start up as soon as you plug your new PC from Incredible Erection into the wall socket.

I have no problem with MS making windows more secure, neither do I have a problem with what that meens to peeps like the guys at Norton. I do have a problem with the fact that I cannot completely rid my PC of IE... Without it I can't get genuine windows certified for some of their updates.

In other words I have no problem with the fact that they are doing it, but I have a huge problem with the fact that they make me jump through hoops if I dont want it.

Of course I am typing this in Firefox on Kubuntu so I dont spose I count for much while I watch my GLX/Compiz glassy windows wabble and play videos in the Alt/Tab preview but I get 2cents right?
 
Yes if you're happy with Linux then good for you. Have fun with it.
I never have and I never will understand why people must Evangelize for Linux.
