Head to head? It's more like Chuck Norris vs Pee-Wee Herman..

The xbox creams the PS2 and with the imminent, oh wait, the delayed launch of the PS3 people would be insane to now wait..

Xbox 360 + WII = PS3 and spare change..

The choice is obvious, I don't even have a HD TV so the Bluray is wasted.

Call me insane. Can't do anything on the Xbox that can't be done on a PC. And with a trunk load of PS2 games, 3 game-crazed kids, and HDTV, I'll just wait for the PS3.
 
Well according to the latest SA Computer Magazine, the real-life quality and performance of games between the X-Box 360 and the higher-specced PlayStation3 are on par. Also, Microsoft have entered into agreements with many game publishers and only a very small handful of games will be exclusive to the PS3.

Given a choice, would you rather spend about R2,600 (X-Box 360 Core $299) / R3,600 (X-Box 360 Premium $399) OR R4,050 (PS3 $540) for your next-generation games console? *Prices based on Internet searches.

Ultimately, the cost of actual games will also determine whether its viable to switch from pc gaming to console gaming, as a cheapish console but high game costs simply don't make sense.

I'm really tempted to get the X-Box 360 - the games simply look amazing. But I live in South Africa and have to look at my monthly budget in order to afford petrol, broadband, home loan, groceries and games. The smart thing is to wait and consolidate debt. The impulse is to get it now, while there's still stock. Just look at the bigger picture and ensure you don't over commit to debt should you choose to get one now. Prices will drop later - just requires patience.

Living ain't cheap in this country especially if u want to buy luxuries.

Same for the PS3. No-one should be buying a console because they expect it to outperform a general purpose computer. It might have a slight edge at launch, but that'll be wiped out in no time.

In the real world the PS3 is looking like it won't be any better than the Xbox 360.
 
The Xbox 360 can connect to your PC and then you can stream family videos, music, photots and the like onto your TV.

So unless you are a hardcore gamer 360 wins hands down.
The 360 also does HDTV and Gatecrasher the backwards compatability of the PS3 is coming under the spotlight, that trunk load of games may not really be playable anyway..

also the price looks more like R6500 than R4050.. Games are expected to be about $80 (R800-R900) as well...

The PS3 offers nothing special to the console wars.

True. I'm not privvy to the cartel determing local economies on retail pricing. I've merely used a direct exchange rate conversion based on prices sourced on the Internet @ $1 = R7-50.

Local prices have always been notoriously higher than overseas prices. Somebody's making excessive profits - even if importers pay Overseas Retail prices instead of Cost, the markup locally is still way too high.

EDIT: $80 per game should equate to about R600 @ an exchange rate of $1 = R7-50. If the games do retail for R800 - R900 in this country, it's just another classic example of my above statement.

Personally, I prefer PC gaming (1920x1080p), but where console gaming scores is with kids/family since everyone can lounge around, watch, interact and enjoy.

There will be compatibility issues on some ps2 games, but I'm not trading the ps2 in, so all is not lost. If the games are too expensive, ps3 will fail, and Sony just can't afford a ps3 failure.

So time will tell.

I might be tempted by the Nintendo Wii, as an addition, if they get their act together by Christmas.
 
Bugger that for a lark. Xbox 360 can't compete with PS3... especially somewhere like Asia where games from Square/Enix are almost completely dedicated to Sony. As well as that isn't the Xbox 360 not backwards compatible?
 
The Xbox 360 is selectively backward compatible. They release the updated BC list all the time.

and as far as I can remember we don't live in Asia and most of our connections are with the EU where the 360 is expected to win this time around especially after what Sony did to them...

Sony still has no killer titles on the horizon and the Xbox already has them in stores and some major ones on the horizon.

EA Sports just signed an exclusivity agreement with M$ for the football games, that seals it for me personally.

Half price console with the same abilities according to everyone who has reviewed them... no contest... Okay so there is some contest which means we all win... Fantastic..

The edge with the next gen consoles is that you are getting a lot of powerful hardware for a very cheap price. If you break it down to a component level and try and price it out you are going to be paying more than double that for a similar PC assuming you could get a triple core 3.2 GHz Power PC for your desktop.

One major advantage with console gaming is that in 3 years time I can still buy a game that will work on the console. You can't say the same for a PC unless you are constantly upgrading it to be able to run the latest releases.

From a quality perspective the console game developers have a finite platform to develop and test against which means that they can get a game out in a shorter time and at less cost. Similar to the stability Apple enjoyed prior to MacOS X when it only had to support a smaller number of hardware platforms.

Also, the development tools are much easier to come by and Microsoft is even engaging the hobbyist/indie developers with the XNA Game Studio Express which is free.

I agree, I wouldn't hold out for the PS3. Its the first commercial product to use the new Cell processor and as with all new technologies I'm sure there will be issues. Nevermind that the Blu-Ray drive is also first generation.

You won't find me wasting money on it. Maybe the PS3 SP1. :P
 
Think I"ll still wait for the PS3 - might have to wait a while though as its gonna be expensive. Never been a xbox fan - I have one though but its only used to stream movies.
Its difficult to compare the ps3 to the xbox360 just yet - let them first release it and we can see what happens.

1) You can't update your xbox 360 if you don't have broadband internet at home. That means no HI Def and No bug fixes.
2) You cant copy mp3's or movies to you xbox 360, you can only rip music and download movies from Xbox live.
3) There is no South-African xbox live.
4) No rechargeable batteries or recharge cable, when getting the premium option. You need to pay an extra R150 for the battery and another R150 for the cable to charge it.
5) 20Gb Hard Drive, but you can only use 15Gb. (so isnt it a 15Gb HDD then)
6) If you have a top notch PC dont get a xbox 360, 90% of xbox 360 games are on PC at half the price. (Why pay double for the same game?)
7) PS3 has blue-ray & the xbox 360 has DVD. Games will get bigger in the next few years with new HD games I.O.W. you are going to be forced to get the R2000 XBOX 360 HD-DVD drive add-on if you want to play games in the near future.

So how much will the xbox 360 really cost YOU compared to the PS3?

If you have internet at home, get the xbox 360, it was made for it. Else wait for something that will work in our local market.

If you have internet at home great else get it we don't live in the 90's anymore, get the xbox 360, it was made for it. Else wait for something that will work in our local market apart from the huge price tag and lack of support that is.

Get a Xbox 360 + Wii for the same price as a PS3. Support the company that is not ignoring you. Xbox live will be live in SA before the PS3 is released.

Edit: Oh and go for the one that has more than 5 games working for it :), Gears of War and Halo 3 make it worthwhile. What does the PS3 have? A COD rip off and a million and one sequels... Proof is in the gaming not the specs

Oh dear, battle of the fanboys. Each console has it's good & bad points, why can't we focus on the games rather than the hardware?
