Any owners of these sets round here? I'm considering getting one, but I've read on avsforum that it has a bit of problem with regards to the rainbow effect.
I would appreciate if a local owner can give me a review of a set that came from Sony South Africa.
 
Have had the 42" model since the beginning of the year. No regrets. brilliant picture quality, particularly with DVDs and HD content. I have an Xbox 360 connected to it, so am able to get HD content streamed to it via the MS Xbox 360 market-place, and of course HD games.

Tips:
- don't bother with the default factory settings for pictur quality, check out some of the tweaks at http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=567709
- i generally don't use my DVD player in progressive mode since the TV has a better de-interlacer
- if you have an Xbox 360, it will upscale normal DVD's to 720p via the TV's VGA input

I bought the TV on special for R14 999 (original retail price in Jan was R26 999). I saw it this week-end at Makro on special for R12 999. Either price is a steal for a HDTV.

Makro had the 50" version for R16 999 as part of their birthday specials. Sadly, not even one of their stores had stock (I phoned and checked with all stores in a 100km radius :D ) and now that model has been completely removed from their website.

Sad, really. What a sweet deal it would have been.

No rainbow or screendoor effect at all. I know that some early adopters in the US notice this, but we have the revised Euro / U.K. model, which doesn't have any of the early issues that the U.S. models had. Sometimes it helps to lag a bit in the techno race.
 
Friend got a 42" one at R12,999 from MAKRO

Picture looks brilliant, way better than most midrange plasmas on the market

Saw no rainbow effect on the programes I tested on it

Hoping to get one myself soon
 
1 question just sprang to mind

Where would one go here to get a new bulb ( which apparently burns out every 3 years with heavy usage) for the tv?

Also anyone know the cost ??
 
Lamp for a 42" is around R1500. Supplied by Sony SA (you can get your local retailer to source it AFAIK) 'cos it's user replaceable.
 
Going to this coming week or two. Some VAT money heading my way for a change :D
 
I went to makro yesterday, was thinking about buying one, the tv was off though so couldnt see the picture quality, but watch out cos they getting sold quickly
 
Just be careful about judging the TV purely on the in-store demo. Most places lets the TV default to the crappy factory default settings (called "vivid mode"), which is known to be terrible. Furthermore, they'll most likely feed the TV with a crappy composite connection, looped to 20 other TV's too.
 
So how do i check the quality then? Should i adjust the settings in store? Play a dvd?

They keep getting new stock
According to MAKRO's website all but 1 shop were sold out 2 weeks ago, but now all but 3 have stock
 
Bought it today. Makro now has them at R9999. I couldn't say no.
 
So how's the TV? I am so tempted to just go and get one this weekend. What's the model number?
