Editing Videos/Movies

Morning all,

Instant Handbrake is incredible! Converted a movie last night to iPod format, what a pleasure!

My next issue: I record movies onto DVD (from DSTV), with obviously quite a bit of lead time before the movie (due to DSTV's screwed up schedules) and also after the movie. this can add up to 30 odd minutes to the movie, with advertisements and what not that I don't really want.

My question: What software can I use to edit the .mp4 file to take out the crap before and after the movie.

iMovie? I use to use my camcorder to digitise tv and that's how I edited all the crap out.
 
I quickly had a look at iMovie this morning, but it wouldn't open the mp4 file (was greyed out on the list).

Thats strange
Which video formats are compatible with iMovie HD?
iMovie HD supports importing video in common formats, such as standard digital video formats like NTSC and PAL, high definition video formats (HDV 720p and 1080i), and MPEG-4, 16:9 widescreen format, and clips from Apple's iSight camera.

You are importing it rather than opening it right?

LOL! I actually wanted to edit my post to say maybe I should just RTFM before posting useless crap here! :D

EDIT: Time remaining for import: 420 minutes :eek:
 
The DVD is "DVD-format" whatever that means :D, like pop it in any player and play it
 
Perhaps something more powerful than handbrake in future? ffmpegX might be better suited. Then you can choose a better format or even clip the recording then and there.

Ahh thanks bwana, will have a look.

Tried handbrake first (easy of use) as I am a lazy b@st@rd :D
I reckon the cutting before converting will be much more suited for my needs (Damn DSTV :) )
 
Have you considered using Quicktime Pro for this?

There is a "trim to selection" function available on the edit menu. Sounds like its exactly what you are after, though the price may not be right.
 
iMovie did the trick. Cut the first 4 minutes and the last 21 ... reducing the actual file with about 180Mb :D
Busy exporting from iMovie to iPod (another 200 minutes). So it takes a while, but it is real easy
