So where is Neotel on the net

Would someone who is using their national and international network service please post some tracert to say google, yahoo and cnn so we can see where the traffic goes in SA and abroad? And obviously to proove that they actually have a live network.
 
mmmmm I don't think they serve consumers just yet. Seems a bit early for that hey, but I might be wrong.
 
Currently Neotel are only offering wholesale international IP & Voice (VoIP) transit services. Essentially they've created a SA POP on the global VSNL/TeleGlobe network connected via SAT3/SAFE.

So there are no end users with service directly from them since they are not offering national or local IP transit, and I don't believe any of the wholesale customers (ISPs) are hooked up yet. I image the first end users who will see traceroutes through VSNL will be leased line customers (probably IS 1st).

Also I believe MTN & Cell C subscribers will soon be placing international calls via Neotel's voice service.

They did parade a few customers i.e. IS, ariva.com, MTN and others. Even if they do not supply services directly to individuals you could still see your traffic routed through their network if you are an IS customer for instance. Do you know if they would be peering at JINX for instance. I am interested to see how their tier 1 POP will decrease the amount of hops to global sites as well as latancy.

Come on you IT geeks at IS, help us out a little.

No idea, however top ISPs peer directly with themselves, JINX is only for the small guys so I wouldn't think its a high priority ATM.

You can't bend the laws of nature ... packets can only travel so fast through SAT3, and their global peering is probably no better/worse than the other big carriers e.g. AT&T, Sprint, MCI, BT, C&W etc. that SAIX & IS currently connect to.
 
Yea well it is not about the laws of nature, its about less hopping between different backbones, and higher priority peering agreements I think. They (VSNL) have their own optic fibres connecting the Americas with Europe and Asia so your traffic will probably only leave their network very close to the final destination. Currently IS and SAIX peer in Europe with some other network provider and are probably small fry in their books so has a lower priority whereas Neotel does not have to peer, they have their own backbone.

Maybe I am speaking complete bulls**t?? If so help me out anybody.

I would say their interconnections are not too shabby ...

... definately not that much worse that they would be noticably inferior to Neotel/VSNL
