Telkom to engage with ISP’s regarding ICASA ADSL Regulations

Telkom has already upgraded all DSL192 subscribers to DSL384, and has also recently bumped up all DSL1024 subscribers to their new 4 Mbps offering free of charge.

Lies. A buddy has been on 1MB since it ws released. And he's still on 1MB. When he phoned telkom to ask why he wasn't on 4MB, he was told they weren't testing on his exchange and he won't be upgraded.
 
The incumbent reiterated that they welcome the publication of the ADSL regulations from ICASA. While they are still analyzing the regulations, Telkom said that it is actively looking at solutions to enable compliance with the regulations.

It's a pity that Telkom did not take part in the multiple colloquii, public forums, various discussions they had with ICASA behind closed doors, etc., etc., otherwise they would have been in a position to comply as soon as the regulations were gazetted.

Now, unfortunately, they are going to have to investigate for the next 10 years, after which they will consider as to the action they may take, after suitable deliberation, of course.

What a wunch of bankers!
 
We should demand that ICASA makes a deadline for these regulations to be enforced by.

Otherwise we'll simply never see them in place. As bekdik says above - Telkom will simply say they're investigating and do nothing for the next 10 years anyway.

It blows my mind that they are being allowed to do as they like. ICASA is clearly working in the best interest of Telkom and not the South African people. It sickens me.
 
ADSL subscribers may also expect value added services from Telkom in future. The incumbent said that the upgrade also, ‘facilitates the possible provisioning of additional Value Added Services to these customers.’

Is this to get around charging rental? thorw us services we don't want or will they take away stuff and say the stuff we had is value added services. I just hope they forced to offer it unbundled too heh :p
 
Not only a deadline VQuest... we need sanctions should Telkom fail. Written into law. Otherwise Telkom will just ignore deadlines as they have many, many times in the past.

Does anyone know where this willingness to discuss the regulations came from all of a sudden? Perhaps related to consumers starting to bug ICASA?
 
Internet Solutions , who also provide wholesale ADSL services to ISPs, did not respond to MyADSL’s request for comment on this matter.

4Mbps my a$$... still on 1024 (if you can even call it that - international is more like a really slow 512)

The service is allready terrible, how can it get any worse I ask with tears in my eyes! The cheek of even mentioning the price when the educated public knows that they are overcharging, bring LLU, bring open access to SAT-3! Bring the price down!

So Telkom already knows it wants to make things worse for the consumer! Is this another veiled threat from the incumbent? Put up a fuss and Telkom will withdraw from EASSy. Put up a fuss and the quality of ADSL will decline even more and the price will increase. Put up a fuss and we'll do what we want and ignore the law, the consumer, good governance and extort as much as we can for however long we delay progress :mad:

Telkom forgot to mention that customers have also been downgraded due to failing cables from the Telkom exchange. No Value Added Services until these lines are replaced / upgraded.

I guess now that I've put up a fuss my new super HomeDSL384 I've been straddled with (from 512/1024) will be degraded another 5% by Telkom. My average on 512kbps was between 83%-92% of the max 512kbps for nearly 4 months. Since the forced downgrade beginning Sept, I'm lucky to get 80% of the 384kbps max at all. Way to go Telkom!

EDIT: Oh yeah, and the 4mbps free upgrade ... is a trial - really silly expecting unwilling participants to actually pay for this

Well that says it all: "We are analysing how we can still make huge profits under the veil of ICASA's new regulations"
Watch this space, higher "quality" :rolleyes: at a higher price;

Telkom's philosophy is less customers at a higher price = higher profits and less expenses. Example : low SAT3 usage at < 20% with high prices = high returns with low expenses. in contrast High SAT3 usage at > 50% with low prices = low returns with high expenses, net result Telkom needs to work harder for less (I'm quite sure you know which route they prefer).:mad:
