Morning all,
Today is D-day for me, in more ways than one, but the more important one is will my new Employer see the benefit of giving me a MBP 17" (like I have now), or will I loose out on this wonderful machine and be forced to take a "Generic" WinXP machine ... only time will tell.
Hold thumbs on this one for me :D

Can we swap jobs
I will decide for you
LandyMan
22-09-2006, 07:04 AM
It is not me who has to make the decision ... the new Employer has to decide if they will be willing to fork out roundabout R10k extra for my Rig. Plus they use mostly M$ products, so we'll have to see how well I can convince them

Tell them I said they will have to give you a MAC
good luck

hehehe, can you just imagine:
"Hey Mr. Boss, I know this native guy, right across the road in Soweto, he says you HAVE to give me a MAC. Ok, thank you, bye-bye" :D
EDIT: and the thread title will then be changed to: To be PC or not to be PC :p

Windows apps dont have to stop you.

I know, I run Parallels with a fully functioning WinXP VM.
Crossover (beta in any case) is a mess, tried it, NOTHING worked, so I chucked it. Parallels runs winxp perfectly
EDIT: but the R10k extra might stop it :D

Definitely, and their policies for their reasons. Look, I don't blame them, as I know what a mess it can turn into if everyone demands their own machines. Just disappointed

Erm, yeah :( For all practical purposes, unless I can make some sort of deal with the company I am leaving. We choose the machine, they lease the machine, we keep the machine.
New company's policies dictate that they provide a notebook, no option of choosing which one, and you can't use your own one

Maybe you just aimed too high? Even though I'm quite comfortable on my 17" powerbook I'd certainly consider a MacBook as a replacement if they balked at a 17" MBP.
LandyMan
22-09-2006, 01:41 PM
Nah, thats not the thing. They supply the notebook (specific brand, specific model), and thats that. Even if I buy the MBP, it will be frowned upon if I use it for business purposes

But i warned you,
You should have told your boss that I Native say you need one
Better luck next time.

Yeah - shame.
In the meantime get yourself a mini for home. Bluetooth keyboard and mouse and hook it up to a nice 42" plasma. You'll feel better. :o

Shame bokkie :D
Ye, I know about these policies. Our company works the same. I still managed to get my own laptop, coz they cant spec for ***** :D
Lots of reasons why companies supply their own specific laptops, price, contracts, accounts and discounts just to name a few.

I will be getting my new baby soon :p :D

Well, interesting developments: No-one in the company really sounds like they want the MBP, and I can't buy out of the rental agreement ... ssoooooo, either the new company will have to buy it out for me, or I can't move :D

HaHe ... <potentially> stopped because of a MAC. Classic :D
If it's anything like a "normal" corporate company, no way the company will let you go with the MAC (someone will have to take it) and no way the other company will buy it for you, unless they really desperate ;)

The new company did head-hunt me, so its worth a try :p

I suppose it all depends on how important having a mac is for your job. Its all about productivity.

Or how desperately they want me to work for them :D
I don't really need a MAC for work, but use it for my photography (ok, I can do it on a normal notebook as well, but it is so much better/faster on the MAC)

Just to help avoid confusion - MAC (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MAC_address) vs Mac (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Apple_Macintosh) - it's probably in the manual. :p

Apparently not, and explained in the manual, which I thought was additional "bubblewrap" to keep my software disks safe :D
