Does anybody know when CellC's roaming agreement with Vodacom ends? I am so tired of roaming on their network and getting slow GPRS speeds!

Surely you only roam in area's where CellC does not have coverage of their own?

You can do a manual network selection to lock your phone on Cell C's network. But i think the agreement ends in like 2009 or something once Cell C have completed there network roll out, to match VC & MTN'S 2G coverage.

you can roam on vodacom wherever you want, with manual network selection.Cell C has a 15 year roaming agreement with vodacom AFAIK, so until 2016 i think.
Strange, vodacom has EDGE in Alicedale.So VM that roams on Cell C roams on Vodacom - a nice way to use vodacom EDGE at 50c/MB hehe

I'm aware of that...
But pkid's original post was complaining of the poor performance he gets from roaming on Vodacom... If you're manually selecting Vodacom and getting poor performance ... then why on earth would you do that ?
... On the other hand if you're roaming automatically it means CellC has no coverage there ... i.e. when the roaming agreements ends you'll have no coverage...

I have forced my phone to use the CellC network. It was choosing to roam on the Vodacom network even though the CellC reception was better!
My problem is that I think that my CellC USB modem is roaming and I don't know how to force it to use CellC. I connect using the modem and get 20kb/s, take the SIM out and connect using my Nokia 6230i and get 130kb/s constant. I then put the SIM back in the modem and get 20kb/s. Then I connect using my Vodacom SIM with the phone and get 20kb/s...

As requested in a previous post, please can you PM me your details so we can resolve the problem you are experiencing.
On the network question, Cell C has approx 2500 of its own base stations and only relies on Vodacom for less than 15% of calls. Cell C's EDGE coverage (with no Vodacom assistance) extends to 90% of metropolitan areas (populations of 50000+) and where EDGE is not available, Cell C GPRS coverage is available.
The roaming agreement with Vodacom allows Cell C access to rural areas where it is not feasible to extend coverage. This roaming agreement, as indicated, is a long term agreement and will continue to be used as necessary by Cell C.
Cell C's own network carries over 85% of our traffic and is 100% separate to the service provided by Vodacom. The services offered by Vodacom to Cell C are purely roaming services (as would be experieced when roaming internationally) with all transactions received on their radio and switch network being transferred directly into Cell C's core network.

Btw, is it possible to tell whether you can get Cell C EDGE coverage without having an edge-capable phone. Was going to get one but not much point if there's no coverage where I am.

Unfortunately EDGE requires an EDGE enabled handset. EDGE is an enhancement to a GPRS network and utilises the radio network resources differently. GPRS handsets are unable to enjoy the benefits of EDGE.

Hi there - I live in Cresta Ext 3/ Jacanlee (near Robindale) - but according to the Cell C coverage maps NONE of the areas around me are EDGE enabled - and there are DEFINITELY more than 50000 people living here .... so when can I expect EDGE?

Hmm... I think Syndyre was querying how to find out if one has EDGE coverage without buying an EDGE enabled cellphone
.... rather than if it's possible to somehow use EDGE without an EDGE enabled cellphone ...
