Porn: School bans cellphones

good - I'm all for letting the schools decide policy for themselves.
 
Interesting how most people (especially parents) tries to blame other things around them when it comes to this issue. They blame MXIT (which in my opinion is a great application) and anything or anybody else except themselves.

Lets face it, WHY DOES A PRIMARY SCHOOL KID HAVE A CONTRACT CELLPHONE. The blame for this type of things should be right at the door of the parents.

I am a parent as well with 2 kids.
 
oh yes, and I agree. Ban cellphones from the schools. Kids are suppose to learn there, not take pictures and chat on their cellphones the whole day.
 
lolz, they can only try and ban cellphones... Not gonna happen. Also saying that parents must not get "fancy" cellphones, S.A is one of the leaders in cellular industry because of the massive demand of cellphones, mostly from the youth. 3G Video Call phones etc.

I have a Nokia 6680 and love it, friend of mine has a N70. Why on earth would I want a lesser phone. Doesnt make sense. They must stop trying to hold back the natural development of technology.

I am all for banning the use of cellphones in class etc, but not a total ban. Cellphones have wonderful uses such as Organizer, timetable, reminders etc.

So what? It doesnt mean parents have to cave in to their kids every demand. My kid is going to have a hard time convincing me she needs a high spec phone for school.

Ah MXit.... I can truthfully blame the drop in my school average on a MXit addiction:)
 
uhm i think its silly to blame technology for lack of control in some cases(excl the porn thing). My younger sister e.g. is not allowed to take her phone to school that was an agreement she got with my parents :p to get one.

The whole mixit thing i think is blown out of proportion slightly, I mean do these parents know that internet access = chat access which has been around for long. I think its due to the fact that it is as easly available + fact that it works on many of the phones that freaks them out.

In one instance i asked a person who was campaining against it if he knew what mixit did and the answer was not correct. Then i tell him and he is only 1/2 convinced its bad cause its no different than sending alot of cheap sms(well the older version) to chat to friends etc. So its like killing a symptom of the major problem which is: Why does your kid have a cellphone (or in school)?]

2ndly if they need it to phone home, there's always the secretary at principals office or a public phone in school :rolleyes:

oh, well no. If you would normally not get them a cell of todays standards, then dont. My dad got me a Talk 120 with the Nokia 6680 about 8 months ago. The point is they must not try stop the development or early adoption of new technology.

New tech is out there all the time, the more that get it the better. If you dont want to get your child a 3G cellphone, thats your choice I guess. However the point I was trying to make is schools shouldnt stand in the way of technologies natural progression.
 
Excellent news! Let the schools decide. Some parents, perhaps even the majority, cant seem to do it for themselves.
 
Well I was reading that last thread,and i feel like putting in my 5c.

a few people were saying that taking cellphones away would help with bullying problems, I really dont understand that, after watching carte blanche i think cellphones expose bullying more than anything else!

And if you dont want your kid using cellphones at school, dont let them go to school with a cellphone, at the end of the day its the parents choice!

Using development of technology as an excuse is really weak. :rolleyes:
You can get all the exposure you need or want after school, not during.
This is actually just driving the point home, meaning you should not be playing with the new trendy technological phone during shool hours. You are supposed to be learning. At least, that is why I went to school. :eek:
 
It's an interesting development certainly and I'm a bit shocked that it happened in a primary school. I'm kinda curious to find out how many of those parents let their kids watch explicit violence without batting an eyelid...

Yeah good point, i wonder how many of the "responsible" parents let their kids play GTA and other violent games. Alot of kids play those sort of games, and parents turn a blind eye!
 
This seems more to me to be a simple case of technophobia. Making technology the scapegoat for the underlying problems, i.e. lack of discipline etc. is convenient, but does not go very far in the direction of solving them. It really is easy to blame bad marks on something like, 'Oh, I'm, like, addicted to mxit'. And the ignorant hordes go, 'Oooh mxit bad. Mxit evil. Lets ban mxit.' (By the way, I'm not a mxit zealot, I rarely even use it. Being used to IM applications like Skype or Jabber or MSN, it's just too blasé.)

Ok, so cellphones connected to the Internet are a means of delivering and distributing pornographic material. But then, so are PC's connected to the internet, magazines, books, paper printouts, video tapes, video CD's, DVD's... (the list could get quite extensive) Are we going to start banning all these technologies from schools as well? We might just as well start schools in caves from now on.

Why don't we rather make use of technology proactively? I shudder to say this, but why don't all these whining parents rather spend their energy on divising and implementing methods that keep their children safe, rather than simply and systematically transform them back into technological cavemen.

By the way, how many of you are actually in school?
