'AA should not be about race' :Solidarity

Seeing as people are no longer legally defined as a certain race on the population register, if you're for instance white and say you're coloured how are they going to prove you're not?
 
This is an interesting point - especially considering the Multichoice share offer to blacks only by Naspers. It boils down to this: Black folks can buy a Naspers share for 10 bucks, and Naspers will front the other 40 bucks. There is a special BEE vehicle facilitating this. Requirements are: 1. Minimum shares apply (I think it's 20 shares @ 10 bucks = R200) 2. ONLY BLACK PEOPLE QUALIFY, 3. The shares must be held by the shareholder for a period of 5 years.

Especially if to be black you can define yourself as African, leaves a lot of room for interpretation. What are they going to do, look at your surname to see if it sounds "black enough"?

Just like the govt officials did it in the Apartheid days ... pull a comb through the hair test or look at the colour of your gums :D.
 
s.a. is so hung up on race it will never come right. what happened to just being citizens of the country? why cant it be like that..!
 
Deals like that being offered by Naspers are also not really empowerment measures unless they have provisions in place to keep the shares out of the hands of fat cats. Otherwise it just becomes another scheme to fatten bloated fat cats that happen to be black.

So far I haven't seen much in BEE that isn't just about swelling the coffers of the few with connections.
 
The thing is owning a couple of shares is in no way empowering - and only 15% of Multichoice is going to be available in this way. It's a racist scheme disguised as a BEE scheme. It is really nothing more than sanctioned, government condoned racism.

Spreading the money around is ultimately a way of empowering people. BEE however has just been a way for a handful of insiders to line their own pockets. It has not helped the people who need it the most. All of this should have been targeted at the poorest people. That might well turn out to be mostly black people. So be it.
