This is an interesting point - especially considering the Multichoice share offer to blacks only by Naspers. It boils down to this: Black folks can buy a Naspers share for 10 bucks, and Naspers will front the other 40 bucks. There is a special BEE vehicle facilitating this. Requirements are: 1. Minimum shares apply (I think it's 20 shares @ 10 bucks = R200) 2. ONLY BLACK PEOPLE QUALIFY, 3. The shares must be held by the shareholder for a period of 5 years.
if you're for instance white and say you're coloured how are they going to prove you're not?
s.a. is so hung up on race it will never come right. what happened to just being citizens of the country? why cant it be like that..!
Spreading the money around is ultimately a way of empowering people. BEE however has just been a way for a handful of insiders to line their own pockets. It has not helped the people who need it the most. All of this should have been targeted at the poorest people. That might well turn out to be mostly black people. So be it.The thing is owning a couple of shares is in no way empowering - and only 15% of Multichoice is going to be available in this way. It's a racist scheme disguised as a BEE scheme. It is really nothing more than sanctioned, government condoned racism.
