A piece of Apple's pie

My guess is Apple rolls out something even better around the same time that the Zune hits the shelves.

The Zune is a first gen product which means that it won't be nearly as well polished as the iPod. Also reports indicate that MS will be selling it at a loss, just to get into the market. It will also not play music bought at any other store other than Zune store so all the "playsforsure" stores won't be able to use it to drive sales.
I think Apple have at least another year to shore up its position before Zune becomes a threat to sales. At the moment it is just a potential threat.
Oh and did I mention they probably won't be selling it here.

And remember the Zune won't play video. Can't see how it will compete with the iPod without video.

umm, yes it will.. firstly i don't really like ms an i really love my iPod, but do u really think Microsoft would be THAT stupid to not include video playback.

Something else to consider is why in their right mind would they include such a huge screen if it were just for displaying artist info, and the occasional photo, especially if they are making a loss on every unit they sell..

maybe think before u post.. a lot of people will take what they read on this forum as truth, even if its complete bull as u have posted fergus..

This is from a MS press release..
The Zune device features wireless technology, a built-in FM tuner and a bright, 3-inch screen that allows users to not only show off music, pictures and video, but also to customize the experience with personal pictures or themes to truly make the device their own.[1]

and if you're looking for more info take a look at the Zune Press kit (microsoft.com)

hope that cleared up some stuff..

as for whether it'll sell...if it turns out to be a better product than the iPod, then i hope so.. but more likely it'll just force apple to jack up their game again..

brooko : What he probably was refering to was video-out. An iPod can connect to your TV and show DVD quality video on your TV. The Zune's video out is pretty appaling apparently

hrm.. i just hate the ipod's naming + sorting scheme of mp3's. bleh. But uhm if zune intergrates more easily and perhaps has codec suport it would be good.

Pick and Play et al are gonna be pissed - the Zune wont play music with Miscrosoft's PlayForSure DRM. :p
hrm.. i just hate the ipod's naming
Its iTunes that does that - try something else.

hrm.. if i copy the mp3 files directly to the folder.. will it work?

Not sure - but there are alternatives to iTunes. Go to iLounge and have a look.

All the hardware vendors who support MS's Play4Sure (like Creative) just got a giant middle finger from MS. Not to mention the online music stores (like the aforementioned pick 'n pay one).

An iPod in the hand is worth two zunes in the bush :p

/me fetches the 2 zunes that bwana threw in the bush :D

Honestly, I've never looked at these Zunes, I just said that to annoy Bwana, I know what an Apple freak he is.

I really can't stand iPods though...

Eventually someone is going to build a better mouse trap :)

bwana v.18 : I agree. But it wont be the Zune. I doubt it will be MS at all. I have a feeling it will be some startup or some other company that noone ever saw coming

Well at least it's not a restrictive ipod

MS has made quite a few strategic intellectual buys in the form of companies that specialise in various fields, not their normal applications-orientated buys, but more technical and hardware related. So, I will not go as far as saying it wont or cannot be them...
They got a device coming which will be used for presentations / conferencing which can 'sense' people in a room for and actually allow you face to face communication, even at remote sites.

Just a point on the Zune, although the player has WiFi built in, it is not 'real' WiFi. IIRC, you can only transfer from one Zune to another, and cannot download directly onto the Zune from the Internet for instance, you must use a pc or another player to transfer.
Some serious shortcomings IMO.
