Landing Station?

What does it mean to have a "landing station" on the SAT3 cable? Where does this SAT3 cable terminate and what equipment typically are used at landing station?

The SA landing station - where the telco hooks onto the SAT3 cable - is in Cape Town in Melkosstrand.

If I understand correctly we are being screwed by EU members. And we have been adviced earlier (mid) this year "not to put our hope on EASSY". Our own house is almost down to its foundation. Damn do we have a chance at all in this 'game'?

How do you figure? As far as I can see they have little impact on what Telkom charges us for SAT3 access.
 
However our investigations have uncovered a Mauritanian customer paying OUM6 million for 1 mbps annually. As an education sector customer it gets a 50% discount so the actual full price is actually OUM12 million per month. Translated in US dollars this works out at US$45,476 for months or US$3790 for 1 mbps per month

If I think plainly then there is lots of money to be made here if other companies created their own cables and resell the bandwidth. This will create competition with SAT3 that will bring prices down.
 
Well although soon Telkom South Africa will face satellite competition, it has until recently not had to face competition of any kind on its monopoly access to the SAT3 cable.

Can anyone tell me when this new competition for satellite is supposed to come into effect? As far as I know only Sentech & Telkom can currently provide this?

As far as I know the other landing station isn't in Durban but in Mtunzini, which is a bit of a way north, up the coast from Durbs.
