'R9m installation delivers R3m a month saving'

The first thing that jumps to mind upon reading this was a study made a few years back. At that stage it was identified that Telkom posed a considerable risk to business.

Now is it not ironical that once you break free, everybody starts seeing advantages. Then to boot it all, start saving after three months!

Now there is a little lessson in there. 3 x 3 = 9 = paid up! What has all the stalling in deregulation cost us :rolleyes:
 
Yup, any business that can recoup an investment against previous cost within just 3 months is doing well, and proves, without arguement, how expensive the alternative had been.

Depends how they're recouping it though:

From being able to print a summons on the spot to overall better policing, the wireless network has transformed law enforcement in the region, he continues. Just the improvement in fines collection means that the solution will pay for itself over a short period of time, he claims.

Glad I don't live there either! People here actually wanted Metro police, but it seems like they're just another cash cow for the municipality to milk residents with.
 
So, who is their provider?
Or are they setup to be in a bubble, detached from the rest of the world / Internet?
From the article it appears that it only services the municipiality, not other external clients.

Still a very smart move though, very clever. Congrats to them.

For a municpality to show such forward thinking and acting on it's promise to improve service delivery is absolutely amazing. I don't live in that part of the city, but I take my hat off to whomever was brave enough break out of the mold and to embrace technological advances for the good of the public. It's a good start. Now's the time for the rest to follow and really give Telkom the finger. In the long-run this would help lower cost of service delivery which means better rates / taxes citizens would have to pay (keeping fingers crossed) :)
 
A redundant fibre cable network was also included between the Germiston and Boksburg offices.

Yes, they are in a buddle. It will mainly be used to access their internal list of known traffic offenders and criminals. But it's still good and somewhere they will see how they can use their network for other purposes and bring in someone to supply bandwidth. An appropriate finger to Telkom.
