This is so true. I have to develop a website for some one where on of the things is to have foto's of a portfolio available we can potential talk about 10000 foto's online in the future. I had to advice him to host overseas seeing his cost will be to high here in south africa (Even though it means his site might appear slighly slower) The extra cost don't outweigh the benefits of local hosting (It is sad but true, we like to be proudly SA, but we can't)
Telkom and it's partner ICASA are fast asleep. They are inhibiting progress. Can't the government see this? I guess with a minister like Ivy.......well, enough said. When will these people ever wake up and take note of what is happening around the world in terms of broadband?

The prices seem to be based on the assumption that all traffic is going to be coming from overseas. For SA-based, SA-centric sites couldn't they charge one price for local access and one for intl? Would make better sense for everyone and cut down traffic on SAT3 which is supposedly so "scarce".
The current state of affairs is truly untenable. Government is the big problem. The status quo is decrepit at best. We need a government policy environment that will allow competition that forces prices down.

Why would they make it cheaper ??
A government stuck on degrading any business that makes a profit without them or their gravy train elite buddies having a share or stake in ? NO Way !!
They will leech us for every sent and then pull a ZIMBABWE !
Open your eyes people this government firstly has no idea about technology and secondly does not give a rats arse about the people here, they want a socialist communist republic where what they say is law and if you do not like it then either leave or die. FINITO !!

As sad as this is to say, I actually am starting to agree with this sentiment. Only looking at all our ministers (except Trevor Manuel) shows this is true
This is a bit off topic but I think people should stop referring to "caps" and "limits". There are no caps on usage after 1 Nov 2005 when telkom started selling to ISP's per GB. You can buy 1000GB if you have the money. One of the reasons the ADSL regulations failed is because of incompetence and the belief that there are "caps".

Yeah, but I havent got R 90.000,00 to buy 1000 Gig so nor R1000,00 to buy 10 Gig's so theoretically there is a CAP

Sounds like something out of the Telkom PR department. A true situation where there is no cap on usage would be where you pay e.g. R300 a month for your ADSL line, including ISP fees for unliimited bandwidth, like overseas. The fact that you have to pay per gig implies that there is a cap, anything else is just semantics.
Most of Telkom and ICASA does apparently.

Im getting so sick and tired of ppl complaining about this and then sitting back doing absolute squat about it. About 3-5% of myadsl actually does something to get things going and try to make a difference for the rest of the country the rest sit on the site and moan.I speak to each one of you.... If you are upset or frustrated with this service then get up off your bum and do something about it.... If you dont know what to do then ASK.

I find it extremly annoying when i get people that post .....blahblahblahblah hate them they suck they need to do better etc.
But then sit on their bums and dont do anything about it.
There are more then enough ways for users to help out and help make things happen.
