Website: How to get sponsors ? Advice.

As some of you may know, I've recently, designed and launched a website called Celebridex (www.celebridex.co.za).

What I would like to know from any other experienced web developers here on myadsl is, how to go about getting sponsors for a website ? I have found a sponsor that I would like to have, but is it as simple as typing them a nice email and asking them "please be my sponsor!" ?

Anyone who could shed some light or experience on the subject would be a great, big help.

just take away the bracket when you click on it.

It depends what sort of sponsors do you want, please define sponsors more clearly.

Sponsor as in someone who sponsors things for you to give away on your site, a sponsor as in someone to pay for your hosting or other things or sponsor as in an advitiser that can advertise on your site?

I might be able to help depending on what you mean.
 
Yes, a sponsor that can pay for my hosting fees (which isn't that much at the moment) and perhaps *if* they can, help sponsor give-aways.

I'm currently trying to write an email to a sponsor that I would like, but it ain't easy. What do you propose I do for them (or what do you think they would want from me) ? A banner on my website ?

to answer your sponsor question.

You have 2 options:

1) either you take part in an affiliate program and advertisers pay you once activity (eg: click) has taken place on your site.

2) You approach sponsors to pay upfront, to put their ads on your site.

Option one you can do right away as it costs the advertiser nothing and they only pay you when needed.

Option 2 is obviously what you would like.

In order to make option 2 a reality you must put content on your site, you must have proof of traffic/visitors to your site. The way I judge whether my site is ready for advertising is when I get emails asking me how much would it cost to advertise on my site without me even having any advertising links on the site.

I have, on a few sites, actually denied advertisers as I feel that the site is not yet ready.

Remember if you let people advertise right away, you will start with low revenue. If you wait till the site is full of visitors, content and general activity, you can set your advertising rates much higher.

How much do you think I could / should charge for the banners on my site at the moment (if you would so kind to check - they are located on the far, bottom left) ? The banners are 150px X 400px. What are the current general going rates ?

that's what I was trying to say, you can't make a standard fee for all sites.

I have seen a hosting site charge R30p/week. myadsl charges R800, and news24 charges about R24000 p.m. if I'm not mistaken.

Your primary concern should be traffic.

If you get 10 people per day and if you get 1000 people per day, you advertising fees will be diffrent.

Also keep in mind that a hacker site with 10,000 visitors a day will be less likely to get sponsors then a computer review site with 100 visitors a day.

Advertisers need to know that they have are getting a good visit/sale, click/sale ratio.

I'm getting on average about 45-100 unique daily visitors on my ISP site, but at least I'm pretty sure that they are all looking for ISPs but I still feel that I need more before I would open it up to advertisers. Forums on the other hand are pretty hard to decide on an advertising fee. myadsl for instance can charge these prices due to the sheer traffic going through the site. I have a personal problem with their figures when they advertise so many visitors and then you look and there are 450k views on the 'thread killer' thread. I don't think there is a fast hard rule here.

What I'm saying here, if you have a celebrity site, don't go to a tax accountant for sponsorship, you'd want to go to some fashion stores, clubs, all the funky kind of people.

Yeah, i just checked this out.... if Hetzner doesnt pay your domain fee, it will get suspended. Alternatively, just go make the payment yourself, its a mere R50.00. Give Uniforum a call.
