Aah - so they shouldn't compete. I see.
Why? They can't even compete in a B-grade league.
I'm willing to bet that there are a few gems amoungst the the players.
I don't think the Spears will be able to survive as a S14 franchise. As a collective they are not good enough (some will say that that is not proved)., but if we bring some of those players into the established unions (S14 franchises)to gain some experience we may find another Gary Tiechman, Francios Pienaar, Danie Gerber ........
We must do something. This used to be a powerful region.

It never was.
You have to remember that those who have the talent are bought up by the big unions. Many black and coloured players in the league come from the Eastern Cape. The latest young player that comes to mind is Dollie that went to WP.
The biggest problem is that every black kid that picks up a rugby ball is not the next Jonah Lomu and the sooner politicians accept this the sooner our rugby will get better.
Oh I so agree. (but let us at least keep the politicians out of the thread)
I do think tho that the Spears have gone to the trouble of finding some players in their catchment area, we might be suprised.
It wasn't long ago that the other unions kept 'stealing' Free State players (Sharks
) and look where Free State is now.I'm thinking of a four letter word right now...
CASH. The big unions have it and the EC region does not. Guys like Mckeever (I also have a four letter word that starts with a C for him) are only there to enrich themselves and so are many other officials in that area. Not until they find proper managers and sponsors can they ever even think of competing in the big leagues.
As for Free State. They steal just as many players (always have) as everyone else. Their "woe be us" propoganda machine just did a better job of hiding it.

Wearing my Sharks cap, I agree.
Wearing my Springbok cap - The Lions (old cats) will be easier to fix than the Spears. It's important for our rugby that we continue with strength vs. strength. Just look at how interesting our Currie Cup in the premier div. has been this year. It's only due to strength vs strength.
We may not see the benefits in next years S14 but I'm convinced if our national format remains the same we will have a winner in 2008. (can we wait that long?
