South Africans continue to search for common terms

Yep, ABSA again....
Atleast people are searching for cars, that's slightely exciting :D

I agree with the article what on earth are people doing searching for absa?

It just doesn't make any sense... It would be easier to type the address straight in. What this tells me is that most South Africans actually don't understand how the internet works...... They don't know what a web address is or where to type it in.,
 
More local content needed on local servers

When compared to countries with a strong Internet culture like Norway and Italy it becomes clear that South Africans still see the Internet as basically a business tool.

This just shows you that the internet in South Africa is just to expensive to use as an entertainment medium for most people.
Pity as that's where I see most of the growth will come from. Now if only Telkom/SAIX could drop the prices of Diginet lines then you would see more servers being hosted locally which in turn will spur on the growth of local entertainment content.
 
People are just too lazy to type in the url. I have a friend who's homepage is google. To check hiw mail, he opens his web browser, types gmail in google, clicks the first line in the results page. So I don't think people can't remember the website url or anything people are just pure lazy²²²²²²²²²²²²
 
Does anyone have the modified google in firefox or if you use google suggest, people type in the dumbest things, try it, You'll laugh
 
I don't know where it started, but I've seen a lot of people with Google (or another search engine) as home page.

When they want to go anywhere, they do a search (without knowing what they are doing).

So, if they want to do banking, they type in ABSA, and they can do their banking.

It is a lazy, dirty way of doing things, but, I guess easier to teach people than training them with bookmarks or getting them to remember URL's

I quite often get that people don't even know where to type a URL in a browser.

I'm surprised that the other banks as low as they are on the list.
 
too lazy even for a Favorites listing? sheez!

Anyway, that klaus mailto must be some kind of bot thing...

Edit: I'm sure either ABSA does this themselves to inflate their egos or that most users of ABSA are so stupid and they search each and every time to get to ABSA's site...

most of these ppl r not computer savy ... so the only thing they learnt and remember is how to use google.... so to them .... google IS the internet :)
 
yeah well google is g0d.. its quicker to search a site using google than to go to that site and use its search function, eg 'wiki myadsl' takes me straight to the myadsl wikipedia page, same with 'imdb movie name'.
call it lazy, i call it getting there quicker
 
The other day I had someone ask me what the website address was for kalahari.net :confused:
 
I wonder if some of the search term aren't accidental.

For instance! If I open my browser there is a slight delay before Google opens as my home page. Allot of times I start typing www.fnb.co.za and press enter and before I realize the cursor has jumped to the Google search field and searched www.fnb.co.za.

Purely accidental! and logical.

I've noticed a trend where people have a search engine as their home page, and instead of typing a domain name into the address bar, what they do is type a partial and even complete site name into the search engine's search terms field & hit enter, then they click on the first thing that pops up...

I blame M$ for culturing this strange behaviour with the evil Internet Exploder browser and its quirky search settings.
 
I am not sure of internet explorer's behaviour but if I type absa and press enter into firefox's address bar it takes me to absa's website - but it looks it up on google first.
 
The conclusion ???.
South African Internet users are just plain stupid.

Google employees have frequently mentioned that one of the most common search words on their website is for Yahoo :).

Yikes, does the same in my Firefox :( IMO the browser should spit out a message similar to: "please step out of your browser and produce your internet driver's licence, then walk straight on the white line in the middle lane of internet traffic and keep going until you reach the site you intended to find..."

Why? It is convenient and it has applications past helping users who don't know and can't guess that absa's address is absa.co.za.
