Samsung starts marketing 10 megapixel camera phone

Sjoe. Why do they even sell them as phones anymore? Wouldn't it be more appropriate just just market them as camera's that you can make phone calls on as well :D

omw, with that many pixels you can probably zoom in to see the plaque on the guys teeth. These damn manufactures should stop concentrating on the camera and concentrate more on the phone functions or even video functions

I dont see the point in 10megapixels on a phone, almost everyones digital camera are only 6mp at the most. Why have 10 on your phone, all you will do is waste alot of space.

How about making nice 4-5mp camera phones, why jump to 10?

The only big point is whether you can set compression levels on photo's. Most miss this criticial point. I have the new Sony Ericsson Cybershot phone, and at highest quality, you can only get an 850k photo file. On a 3.2mp Cybershot camera, you get 2.5 mb. Certainly the camera manufacturers ensuring a distinctly seperate market. I'd rather have 30 photos that 60 at better quality if I prefer. Remains to see whether Samsung do the same. 10mp at horrid compression levels will look cr*p no matter how large it is.

Good! I will go for it!. A few years from now we will wonder how did we live with or accept 3.2 sh@t pixels. Progress is good! Remember what we said about P4 and S3 video now we have Conroe and quad SLI and still we need some juice for HD and Bluray!

Foir the same reason we started byuing tapes... CD's... DVD's....

It is called progress... :D

But this is totally out of proportion progress.. most digital cameras arent even 6mp. Why make a phone so expensive to get 10mp into it. Especially when you could burn the phones entire storage space very easily if you actually took photos in 10 mega pixels.

Why not have a better price more functional 5 mega pixel camera?

Phones with standard 10 - 20Gb storage are coming out as we speak (gsmarena.com). HD space is not a problem.

I was amazed 10 years ago when handed the game "4D Stunt Driver". It fit onto 4 1.4Mb stiffies. It was the largest software program I owned/copied and installed on my new 20Mb hardrive!

Look at us now....:D

Besides being a waste of storage, if it doesn't have an optical zoom then it's about as useless as a 1MP camera phone. It's purely a marketing gimmick and incorporates nothing new in terms of engineering and progress - all they do is improve upon the software interpolation. Also apart from the optical zoom, in order to get a true 10MP, you would need the optics to go with it - software doesn't cut it. People are going to rush out and fork over large sums of money without realising they would get a better picture quality from a 3MP Cybershot for R1500 - all this because the adverts say 10MP. Well if anyone wants to be gullible, I say let them blow their money :p

Have you got all the specs? Please supply link!

Lol - True. Just like today's Week-ender Vodacom packages are 1345% better than 2 years ago!

It is the way it IS going to go - bigger is better!

Unfortunately I'm capped internationally at the moment but I'll try and get one as soon as I can. There's only a certain resolution threshold that software interpolation can safely manage before image quality starts to deteriorate. There's no way that a 10MP camera phone operating purely on software can compare to a R6000 6MP Canon for example - the reason being that a true indication of a camera's capability is it's CMOS sensor. By using software they are also able to maintain the size of the device because it wouldn't be able to accomodate the necessary hardware in order to produce a true 10MP image.

If the Canon has a a CMOS sensor capable of 6MP, it produces a true 6MP image. The Samsung on the other hand might have a 1.3MP CMOS sensor trying to push out 10MP due to some trickery in the software. The end result would be a 1.3MP image the size of a 10MP image. A consequence of this is that you start noticing weird fuzzy and snowy effects in the final image.

EDIT: if you have a look at the N95 link you just provided, you would see that it incorporates the proper hardware - CMOS sensor, optical zoom etc. The image produced on that may very well be superior to the Samsung.

Try Imaginet or Webafrika. 27Gb downloaded so far for this month and still going strong @ R 70 per Gb! Screw that imaginary Telkom 3Gb limit!

I'm already running on the IS backbone, no international access ;)

Woa I dont know what you guys think but I think thats damn snazy. Why go 10mp instead of like 5/6? because its more mp and you can brag about it :D
