I've been connected to Virgin Mobile with my Data Card for 5 hours now without any disconnects. Speed is not the best but I don't have any problems.

I want to see how long it lasts although I'm going home in about 2 hours time.:rolleyes:
 
Well, technically it should be like that for days. Are you used to disconnecting every couple of hours? Any broadband service must be able to remain connected for weeks, otherwise it's crap service.

You probably don't know about the disconnects. Most of the guys had problems with disconnects every few minutes. Me too. But now it's fine.

Broadband?? Remember, anything above 2Mbit/s is broadband.
 
50cents per meg, Hell aslong as its stable... I don't think ppl would mind.. Specially for low-usage ppl. (For stuff like emails, little irc, or msn ) :>
 
are you guys using the 128k vm sims? i've been trying to get my vm 64k to work and I keep getting the 619A error, I've just e-mailed Huawei and ask for there explanation of the error, hopefully this will shed some light on this.
 
These disconnects has become a daily appearance for me...One a day still keeps my R2/MB connection away

Read some of the other posts then you will know exactly what to do to get a 128k sim. All of us that uses the Huawei Data Cards are using 128k sims because the 64k sims doesn't work in them.

Don't know what the difference is between the 64 & 128 SIM in looks, but it said 128 on the pack.

This is post No. 01 for the new VM SIM. Have got it working on Option Noizomi Globetrotter 3G+ HSDPA card.

Just had to change the init string and DNS.

So far so good.

What sort of speeds can be expected ?

Sometimes I wish I knew what you guys were talking about. I hardly ever have any disconnects. The last disconnect was over 2 weeks ago. I've never really been "inconvenienced" by disconnects and i download mp3s every day using mIRC:)

....but VictorLebza is in the same area as you. I also get disconnects. Not frequent but annoying nevertheless. The speeds are also UP & DOWN. I'm not in Brackenfell.
 
Reaching the end of my tether..

I hardly ever get disconnected... however what I am getting with increasing frequency is "lock ups"...

My connection will appear to be online and fine... but trying to ping/surf/whatever has no effect at all .. and I see no data at all going either "up" or "down" ... I'm still not entirely sure if this is VM or my Novatel U740 data card giving problems..

Another problem I get quite is often is when the connection appears to "fall asleep" or should I say it sometimes seems like it gets "bored" ... the data will randomly just stop coming for no apparant reason... and this is not a "disconnection" or "lock up" because all I need to do then is "re-click" the link and the second time the page will load OK (or sometimes only on the third or fourth try etc.)

And when I don't have any of these problems I get an extremely slow speed...

In the beginning VM was great.. just an occaisonal bit of downtime...
Then I got my 128K sim (Thanks to Piesang ;) ) and it got even better... I could use my datacard and get EDGE - full strength signal
For about the first month or so I got great speeds, averaging 80-120 kbps and peaking at around 200 kbps especially on downloads.. (I saw it touch 220kbps at times!)

But the last about three weeks I have not seen anything over about 80kbps at the most :(
It's seriously annoying me... I don't really need high speed ... 50kbps is quite fine.. but what I'm getting lately is terrible!

South Africa's definition of broadband is (unfortunately) anything which is 256Kbps and over. Of course we don't agree with that, and Hellkom's definition of broadband is 2Mbps and over.. anything less than 2Mbps and more than 128Kbps is mediumband, and anything below 128Kbps is narrowband. Unfortunately ICASA has set the bar very, very low (as we have become accustomed to).

The current 1Mbps ADSL connections which have been upgraded to 4Mbps qualify - in our opinion - as broadband. Telkom are very tight-lipped about any figures for some reason though - (maybe because of all the other landline providers competing with them?) - so we won't know how many 4Mbps users there are experiencing what we would call broadband, but that would be the definitive figure we would use as the amount of broadband internet users in SA.

Speeds slower than our recommended 2Mbps minimum could be labelled as high speed internet, but it's not a true broadband connection. That's just our opinion though. And if you're bored, pop around to www.speedtest.net to see what speed your line is running at, and while you're there please spare a thought for the poor sods overseas with 24Mbps, 50Mbps, 100Mbps and 1Gbps connections.
 
Well.. I've decided to give my VM simcard a holiday :D

I've loaded a 350MB bundle on MTN... when it runs dry I'll decide whether it was worth the few extra bucks or not... :)

So far it's flying... (meaning MTN)
 
How long do you think the promosional 4mb/s broadband will last? I've heard that it's only for a couple of months, and only for the existing 1024kb/s customers?
