Tough for ISPs to compete against Telkom in ADSL ISP space

Telkom is making it very tough for Internet Service Providers (ISPs) to compete against its own ISP, TelkomInternet. Are they behaving in an anti-competitive fashion?

Of course they are:
1. Government legally sanctioned monopoly.
2. Supported by ICASA on every turn.
3. Profits. Can any of the ISPs attest to such healthy income?
 
A client was fuming the other day: He called Telkom to report a faulty telephone line, and had to listen to sales talk on Telkom's wonderful product range before the operator allowed him to report the problem.

Similarly, Telkom abused their position to sell their ADSL access packages when one ordered an ADSL line - I don't know if that is still the case, but they know who all the ADSL users in the country are.

Hell, at this point lost of wirecutters will even help. Anything and everything need to be done. Look at other countries around the globe, when reamed by Government/Monopolies they take to the streets. Often the only solution is violent protest, and by the looks of things this is the only thing that will make this Government take a second look at the crisis the telecoms industry is in. Thanks to them and their Telkom buddies. These fools are not up to the task their job titles require from them.

Argh if only we can get groups of 3 or 4 thousand people in all the major cities to protest (violently if needed) on a regular basis, and at the same time. Then maybe we will be heard. I don't think diplomacy works here, it's been tried, tested and prooved that it will fail...
 
Unfortunately ICASA seems to be paralysed by a lack of leadership. ICASA’s chair, Paris Mashile, recently stated that there was insufficient evidence that ADSL pricing was too high, effectively undermining all the work done by previous councilors and ICASA employees.

Which is why I believe a Constitutional Amendment is required to free ICASA from the bosom of her evil Poisonous Ivyness - effectively granting full independence [with no room for doubt] to ICASA and invalidating the recent ICASA Amendment Act. Paris Mashile can continue to suckle as a minion under her Poisonous Ivyness at the DoC, but not at ICASA.
 
Hope for consumers and ISPs may rest with ISPA’s Competition Commission complaint but only time will tell if either body is able to effectively reign in Telkom.

Oh please! With Telkom's track-record, it is obvious that Government's shares ensure that Telkom are a law unto themselves. Nobody (not even Chuck Noris) can reign in Telkom :(

The mass revolt required to bring about immediate reforms are nicely distracted by unemployment, increasing levels of violent crime, health issues and are placated by visions of World Cup 2010 glory :rolleyes:
 
Yes it sad that Telkom is allowed to operate in the isp industry. It is even more sad to see 22.7% of the informed myadsl.co.za regulars are supporting them every month. Really sad for me. :(

This is exactly the reason why I don't have ADSL or a fixed line at all! I WILL NOT support Telkom while they are effectively oppressing us financially, broadband-ly and otherwise-ly! Go, Telkom, go! You will definitely NOT see any of my very hard-earned cash anytime soon! :p
