View Full Version : Not happy with BT Games!

I placed my pre-order with BT Games because I would like to support one of our few dedicated gaming stores. Anyways so I ordered GW-Nightfall and then they offer me the bonus pack for R50. Seems decent so I say go ahead. I am told because I am pre-ordering I also get R25 off the R300 retail price. I am again happy. I walk out the shop feeling happy with my purchase, game and bonus pack for R325.
I later find out that I will not have my game on release date (no reason given) and what really irritates the crap out of me is I see Digital Planet has the game and bonus pack for R233.70inc VAT.That is close on R100 difference!!!!
Screw that, BT you have now lost all future purchases from me!

I have only had good service from them. On pre-order and otherwise. Have 2 pre-orders "waiting"....NFS Carbon and Test Drive Unlimited. Was already warned by email, in response to another query I had, that NFS might not be available end of October due to EA monthend procedures and to expect early November. Good work from Shannon :D

So just because you didnt look around when you did your purchases you blame BT Games?
Did you order the GW:Nightfall SE or the normal game btw?

I ordered the standard ed with bonus pack (R275 + R49). I phoned and after 15min find out that the shop are just idiots and are supposed to give you discount if you buy them together. They have also never heard of the customer is always right approach and it is really not cool to get angry at a customer when they have a valid point.

I also placed an order with them and thus far not too many issues, just had to remind them to give me my discount. ;)
Didn't get any notifications that my order will be delayed, so here's to hoping :p
PS> I'm in CT so doing all my stuff online and via e-mail.

I made a comment earlier about BT Games...
To quote Mircosoft
“Xbox 360 will be following an aggressive pricing strategy and consumer retail prices for the games will range from R199 for classic gaming titles, with a R499 ceiling price for triple A collectors editions,” says Cindy White, Microsoft group marketing manager for Xbox 360.
Right...
- BT Games - Tomb raider - R575 - def. a ceiling price there :(
- Take2.co.za Tomb Raider - Our Price: R 420
I wont buy from BT Games

Hold on a second, if you say u pre-ordered the GW Nightfall std edition at R275 and you took the GW Pre-order pack then the R49 u paid for the pre-order pack comes off the price of your pre-order. Ie : R275-R49=R226
I do believe that you are saving R7.7 so whats the problem???

Wrong!!!! Take 2 is selling an NTSC version (direct US import) for R420, the normal version sells for R542 incl. but excluding R29 delivery and the waiting period. This makes them R571 for the same game and R4 cheaper than BTGames which im sure they wont mind reducing if you ask nicely. I just wish u okes that are posting this crap would wake up and do some research before you post senseless posts!!!!

Let me tell you the catch here. Tomb Raider is region free, thus what Take2.co.za has is the NTSC-J copy from Asia which is the cheapest region you can buy games from.
All X360 games from BT Games are from the EU which are PAL. Thus the price difference in SOME titles will always exist.
Now to base your decision in not buying from BT Games because of ONE game out of 20 is just.... your choice. I hope this explains your price difference for the game you love to quote. ;)
EDIT : Bummer... i had more text to write thus my 2nd place in the same post. :p

As I stated, I would much rather support BT than any other e-shop. I think it is great what they are doing for gaming but I think they just need to refine what they are doing and their business practice.
I did speak to Shannon and in fact it was her that got stroppy with me! She did also rectify my problem but I kinda walk away from it with a bad taste in my mouth. I came with a valid point and she gets heated up. If you deal with customers you will deal with criticism and you must know how to deal with it, listen to their griefs and help make a solution, don’t fight. Even if you are right you don’t walk away a winner.
Another of my issues was BT's differences in pricing. How can your online sales division under-cut the prices of their own franchisees. Because of BT's mindless practice I will never support the physical shops because I can order the game over the net, have it delivered to the shop for free and pay for it at the shop for cheaper than it is to drive to that shop, pick it up off the selves and pay for it. Honestly I don't see that as sensible business practice at all, why under cut your own branches.

BTW its not a franchise. The online prices are cheaper because they are wanting to promote online orders and there are no admin costs involved in online ordering which means you are saving at the end of the day. Just another way they are helping their clients and making gaming in south africa BETTER! You are an isolated case and make me  with ur petty complaints. Its because of ppl like u that makes sales ppl want to leave the industry!

So as a consumer, if I have a gripe I must sit back and take it?
dabouncer
13-10-2006, 04:28 PM
I also work in sales and find that most ppl have valid gripes and a small minority of those gripes are just to defame the salesmen or company and find a fault with something for the sake of it. Salesmen are told all the time that we must sit back and take every1's ****. So give the sales guy a break, he is human aswell and maybe he is learning the ropes of pre-orders and could not relay the correct info to you upon u doing ur pre-order. Just chill.

And also BTW, I know everyone uses WA as an example and now I will too. Have you ever seen how they handle complaints? They take the complaint and they help you out with it. You start off frustrated and irritated with your problem and generally walk away feeling sheepish that you got hot under the collar in the first place. You never walk away cursing. If they are at fault they always try and offer a solution and will admit when they are at fault. It you are at fault they will keep quiet about it and help you see where you got frustrated.

After speaking to our Pavilion Manager it has come to light that they had decided to only deduct the pre-release pack at launch.

I have been on both sides of the counter, and I know that sometimes clients can be difficult, and sometimes sales people can be difficult as well, the problem with James was that most likely was angry with the store and took it out on the sales lady, and she obviously got irritated with him because it wasn't in her hands.
In a situation like that, you should make your complaint with top level management.
By the way, has anyone had this problem with BT games, I gave them a ton of second hand games in exchange for credit about 7 months ago, and I have never been able to use my credit, they always say there is a problem with the system.
Surely they should offer me my games back??

I am over it, I if I get my game on the 27th and a credit note passed or my money back I will be stoked. I don't like to spend more than I have to and from now on, if BT games has the right price I will buy off the net and just collect it from the branch. silghtly of topic here, but I would agree with the point that their staff is not always the friendliest.
I have often gone to the shop, asked a question and when they don't know the answer to something they usually give you a long shpiel of what they think the answer is. And heavens forbid you correct them they get peeved off with you. I don't really like dealing with salesmen that give you the impression that you must fall on your face and thank them for dealing with you.
On the bright side, as far as games go, they are usually better stocked than most other shops.

Well i've had relatively good response from BTGames up to now. Although i am missing the generic "sales@btgames.co.za" kinda email for exactly the "person x goes on leave" reason. I saw on the website there is like 4 individual emails listed instead of just a generic email that gets routed to whoever is responsible at the time......maybe something to consider in the future?
At one stage i wasn't sure whether i should email Jorina or Shannon [because the one seems to confirm my purchase and the other sort out my login issues...]
Either way, too bad Gothic 3's arrival date went missing [from 20 Oct to TBA] just as i placed my pre-order! Heard no news as to what happened there, had to scramble to pay on the 19t to qualify for the pre-order price and then the
date dissapears :/

Too many excuses from the retailers end it seems in the country as a whole. Especially the ones with the shops. So your life must come to an end because someone has gone on leave? And whose problem is that?
It's a cheesy excuse for cheesy service. Allot of retailers think their only existence is to do you a favor forgetting that without the customer there is no shop.
SA retail service especially in the consumer .T sector is shocking sometimes. You get better service form the flea market :) That's why I don't bother, import makes life allot easier. It takes longer, but I don't ever have to see someone for any reason and surprisingly enough without this human prescience or interaction it actually works out better.

I think that uis why you are so sensitive... you are too close and a little biased at best.
I can align myself more with James viewpoint than I do with yours.
If I am a client and bought merchandise I expect service or answers for the money that I gave them or am thinking of giving them. That is what customer service is all about. I don't need no stroppy remarks or attitudes.
This is not in relation to BT but in general sales.
Honesty and admitting you don't know or made a mistake is also key, if you don't know something, say so, but say you will find out and actually get back to the customer.
It is true everyone is trying to make money online, hence online prices being cheaper these days more often than not.
BTW, I have received nothing but good service from BT. I will be receiving my delivery on Thursday, confirmed today.
Please give me a call on Monday, I will see what I can do for you, I run the Northgate Store...

Oh well...
You cannot just hope / wish people will understand without actually conveying it to them. Customers aren't mind readers.
Communicate with your clients. Not all of them are unreasonable ;) or even stupid, like some sales people think. And don't worry, I have done sales in my past as well. So, I know a bit. :)
You will be surprised to see how understanding customers can be when they know what exactly is happening or going wrong where.
OK, I'm not trying to stickup for anybody here, but assuming you mailed Jorina, she has been on leave for the past few days and will be back tomorrow.
So glad Jorina was not on leave when I mailed her today. :D
Seriously, this is a flawed system and I think it will be better for you guys and the client to have generic e-mail addresses, instead of personalised ones. General IT practice. You are in the IT industry afterall. ;)

huh? when does that apply? My order had this on:
Expiry: The order for this item will expire if payment is not received by close of business on the launch date
Payment Date: You have until close of Business on the 19 October to make payment and qualify for the pre-order price.
So if they can't guarentee the pre-order price why is there expiry dates and a "due date" ?
Anyway if they change the price AFTER i paid [in full] within the required time, then i don't think i'll bother pre-ordering again. I don't pre-order to get the game cheaper, i pre-order to get it when it's released...if i have to do double payments and get all kinds of "surprises" i might as well wait and buy it in the shop and make a calculated decision......
i mean imagine you pre-order a game going for R250, pay and then 1 month later they say it's R500 ...i assume one can then cancel the order and get your money back?
evilspinach

I got the notice as well.
I pre-ordered and paid in full in early October.
BT informed me that I owe some 10 odd R's, which is payable EOB 26 October.
I queried it and Shannon was kind enough to call me back and explain that it is unfortunate but unforeseen. The increase is due to the R exchange rate. They only heard late yesterday about it.
This confirms what I said in an earlier post about the R exchange rate maybe being the cause for the increase.
I am not too upset about it, such is life working in a global economy. Good service from BT, Shannon and others. :)

As I understand it you can switch between pre-ordered games or even use the credit against another purchase.
As lildeath pointed out, I do not think it is unreasonable for BT games to pass on increases due to currency fluctuations..althought when the currency strengthens maybe we'll see a price reduction

This confirms what I said in an earlier post about the R exchange rate maybe being the cause for the increase.
I am pretty sure they don't DROP the price if the exchange rate IMPROVES [and thus give me credit] .....
So this pre-ordering process sounds a bit shaky to me. I don't know if this works like this with other companies, but i've pre-ordered many times from Kalahari and never had the price change on me .
Although OBVIOUSLY i expect price changes if i pre-ordered something into the distant future which haven't been released or not sure about release [i.e. a PS3 to name one] . But if the game was released overseas or have a definite release date [and DOES release as scheduled] then i kinda expect the company to have "buffered" the price properly.... I mean if you KNOW something is released in a month and are selling it already then SURELY you must have a formula to "cover your a$$".
If it's a game like Duke Nukem Forever..sure changing the price is a certainty.
As I understand it you can switch between pre-ordered games or even use the credit against another purchase.
If thats true then yes, that is a solution . i.e. i paid R250 for a pre-order, price change to R350 and i know it will drop after release to R300 ..then i'll instead take the credit and use it to buy the SAME game after release when price drops [kinda silly, but that's what i usually see happens]

The pre-order price is always less than the normal prices at BT Games, although I'm not sure how kalahari and take2 work for pre-orders.

Actually, just for interest sake, Take2's price has also increased from when I did the original pre-order with BT (I always compare prices). Take2 also did not have the pre-release at the time.
So going by this logic I could have expected the same thing from Take2.

The pre-order price is always less than the normal prices at BT Games, although I'm not sure how kalahari and take2 work for pre-orders.
True, my pre-orders on kalahari was standard pricing [i.e. R350 for a PC game] , in fact at times it was more expensive than the release. The issue here is, it's like being lured into buying at BTgames because of the "special pre-order price" and then they change the price willy-nilly [after you paid] to be more expensive than Kalahari/take2...
I'll grant a company that if exchange rates go crazy , but it just leaves a bad taste. I would rather pay a "roof price" and then get told the price dropped so i have R50 credit than paying a "floor price" and then get told i need to pay R50 more. It's a psychological thing , i still end up paying the same in both cases with a huge difference on how i feel about it....

I have put my paisely slippers back in storage. They will lie in wait to be waved at evils far greater than BT. We've had good service thus far from them.
This little episode was a little confusing though. Especially since we have a document saying "Paid in Full". On principle, not money, it irked me.

Agreed, I missed your point that they then become more expensive than other companies...hmmm.....I would think you would then be entitled to cancel that order and take your business somewhere else.

Lol... I was not wanting an immediate response... I Have Month End On Me! And also, I was not expecting them to phone me !
Oh and do you know what they said when I phoned??? "Sorry, I was reading your mail and we only have 1 phone in the office so I have to wait until the other lady is finished!"(Perhaps they need to have a look at their systems)
Surely e-mail is a lot faster than phoning? This would all have been resolved a lot faster if they just put the whole R/$ explanation into our order confirmations! Or they could've sent out an e-mail this morning with all the information. This would also prevent e-mails going back and forward all the time! They would also probably not have had to deal with so many people today either!
I personally would like to thank Jorina as she has been a great help (not only today). And if I spoke to anyone else besides her I would've lost it!

Fair point, but I wouldn't classify them as an 'online store', they are a brick and mortar store with an online presence. In my experience when dealing with an online store the response time is anything between 24 and 48 hrs ;)

Dudes.... Get with it.... It's called "Rand - $ exchange". WTF is so difficult to understand ?
Well i personally think exchange rate is a lame excuse in general, it just shows a company do not know how to plan : [the only exception is if the currency crash, which is NOT the case with the rand]
http://www.x-rates.com/d/ZAR/USD/hist2006.html
March 6.24359 ZAR (23 days average)
April 6.0811 ZAR (20 days average)
May 6.32246 ZAR (23 days average)
June 6.9738 ZAR (22 days average)
July 7.06881 ZAR (20 days average)
August 6.9503 ZAR (23 days average)
September 7.4355 ZAR (21 days average)
October 7.68368 ZAR (17 days average)
An increase from R410 to R475 = 15% ..... Surely companies have some sort of currency insurance / buffer at least for a MONTH out on importing ? I don't think companies should make the daily/weekly fluctuation of the $/R the consumer's problem , they should then consider getting better importing contacts. Surely importers don't do business like this? [oh, on friday the R/$ was R6.70, but on wednesday when i made the payment it was R8.00, sorry 15% increase for you! ]

An increase from R410 to R475 = 15% .... The rand never "jumped" 15% , it took almost 6 months to depreciate 15% .
I've seen this thing before when the rand hit R13/$ ...companies increase their prices INSTANTLY and DOUBLE the exchange rate and then blame "r/$" and uncertainty...which is a load of hogwash. When the rand drops back to R6.00 , it takes them years to drop the prices....
Anyway this is in general and not specific to BTGames, all companies does it and us little customers just accept it like idiots.
Agreed. All I'm saying is this has been going on & on & on. There is no way this will change. The fact is your going to have to pay the asking price and that is it.
Another thing. Yes the Rand value didn't decrease by 15 % but you need to take other factors into consideration aswell. this also has to do with the Rand - $ exchange. Import taxes, Shiping these are just a few.

If you look at your rates you have provided it showed that the Rand devalued by 23% (6.24 - 7.68), no business can afford to simply absorb this, and they will have to pass it on to the consumer.

Of course, that's life, but it didn't happen overnight. Surely a company don't advertise pre-order prices using the value of the rand in MARCH ? I would at least think when you put a price on your site [especially if you call it a "special" ] you would at least consider what the R/$ is NOW and what it "might be" next month [or in 2 months]...and "buffer" accordingly.
Anyway i'm no expert on how online retailers function and would be interested to know how they calculate their prices [and how often they recalculate them] .

The fact that people come here to bitch and moan gives them the right to. if you are a happy bt supporter then by all means create a topic stating how wonderful BT is and let the people who have something to say, say it there.
I was not happy with the LAST MINUTE price increase yet I bought the game - why cos I was too lazy to take a drive elsewhere or look else where for the game.

If you paid for a pre-order game now, then the price will remain the same. If the price were to drop we would credit you the difference.
We'll never charge you more for a pre-order item.

Pitpull you make absolutely no sense, the reason we have such bad service in S.A is because most South African's don't complain when they should, everyone has the right to complain about bad service.
And then you say "import the games yourself, and sell them to your friends for profit" what on earth are you on about?
The cherry on the cake is when you say "I hope this sorts this thread" as though the crap that you just wrote would solve anything.Let alone make sense. "you need help bud, go book yourself in somewhere, there are places that can help people like you."

My Wife took in our XBOX to BT games in Northgate yesterday to sort out a problem and everyone was very helpfull and she was very happy with the service she got, even when she felt she didn't really know what she was doing.
Only problem she had was Dean laughing at how we opened the XBOX box.. But its not my fault I swear.. There is a really good explaination for it I swear.
Thanks BT
lol!!! You know, we got about 10 X-Boxes back and not 1 was opened properly! I just gotta laugh! EVERY box was ripped open!!! It seams like you guys bought the things, and opened them the second you got into the car! Like children on Christmas morning!!!
Sorry, but you just gotta laugh! It's kinda funny when you see these things! :D
Anyways, thanks for the compliment! ;) OH! And please don't break the new headset!!!

Sorry mate, but I just need a detailed explanation of what you need or want to do...
I bought the R50 Nightfall preorder, and saw that this amount would be credited against the purchase of the full version. So, if I buy the Collector's Ed at BT in 2 weeks, will the credit still be applicable?
Currently that offer makes BT's price better than a few other places

Send me a mail at work with your account details on it so I can check if you still have that credit there...

Deanos, despite the nature of this topic - nicely dealt with on yours/BT's behalf. "Moan gat" topics can easily make or break why people support a company when things get a little confusing, depending on the company and its reaction. Yours has been excellent, thank you!

No offense m8 and I'm just replying to this post, but you're the one who was stupid enough? Sure, BT Games has excellent service as I've bought most my stuff through them but don't you think it's YOUR responsibility to shop around for a product for the best possible price that suits you?
Personally I'd not even bother with DigitalPlanet because their service sucks, so paying a R100 more for something from a place that actually gives me service is a good deal imo.
Short 'n sweet of it is if you want to bitch, bitch about how they screwed you over by selling you pirated games or how the store attendee mugged you for your money, not for something as petty as this because ITS YOUR FAULT. Not theirs.

Anyways, thanks for the compliment! ;) OH! And please don't break the new headset!!!I'm treating the new headset like Gold.. I seriously have no idea what happened to it. It stopped working while it was on my head in the middle of a conversation with some guys I was playing Poker with.. and my head aint that big.. I promise.
As to the box.. I really do have a valid reason. On launch I got two Xbox's from you guys. One I bought, and the other you were so kind to give to me free in the raffle you held. Well they both came in different boxes. The free one came with a carry handle type case (and had a US plug) and the one I bought was the .. well .. the now broken box.
We went right over to a friend of mines house and I gave him the Xbox with the Carry type case as a gift.. and it opened from the TOP. At 3:00 am that night when my wife and I got home.. we tried opening the box in the exact same way... as you well know it didn't work to well. So it really wasn't my fault :D

Unfortunately, pressure is one of those things you just gotta deal with!
When you have 10 customers screaming at you from all sides and the systems go down because Telkom is working on the lines...
You have 3 phones on your ear and a cue of people waiting to purchase!
I could go on for ever trying to explain!
It's a very challenging job! Not easy being in the front line of customers all demanding stuff at the same time!

I think just the fact that Deanos is on this forum trying to help everyone out that needs something, as well as dealing with all the other work he must have at BT games shows that they are prepared to go the extra mile for customer care.
Although I had problem with my credit at BT games I must say that they are leagues ahead of the competition, they always have the latest titles,Their prices are good, their staff are friendly and I often go in just to chat to them. (there is nothing worse then someone who sells games but knows nothing about them) but at BT the guys are clued up.
So well done guys, keep up the good work.

If the licence's cost is included in the full package's price, then that is true. If the publishers agree to sell licences separately, without needing an original copy of the software, then you'd save money.
In the case of NWN2, if you're exchanging licences in order to have 2 copies running whilst having paid for only 1, then you are committing piracy.
