Flame: My birthday present to me
A fellow named "Larry Bodine", who is apparently on the advisory board of "Law Technology News" (e.g., he's a technology advisor) and is also a law firm marketing consultant, has written a piece where describes, using no small amount of factual errors, fallacies, and other bad writing techniques, why he doesn't like the Mac.

I wouldn't normally see an article on a law technology site like this, but it's getting linked from some of the Mac meta sites I frequent, and this is how idiotic memes get started.

So, since the date on the article is tomorrow (he wrote it FROM THE FUTURE!) and that's my birthday, I considered this an early birthday present and decided a good old-fashioned flaming was in order. Ah, it's been too long. Shall we?

How much are Macs these days?
 
AntiThesis : Roughly the same price as a similarly specd PC, sometimes a bit more, sometimes a bit less. There isn't much leeway to buy a low spec machine though, so you wouldn't find a 4 grand pentium type machine

Desktops:
Mac Mini (Small form factor) starts a R5869
iMac (All-In-One) starts at R10271
MacPro (Pro Workstation Tower) starts at R20053

NoteBooks :
MacBook (Smaller consumer range) starts at R10271
MacBook Pro (Larger Pro notebook) starts at R17119

I've never found an all-in-one machine like the iMac appealing. Their laptops are a different matter though :)
 
There are a few technology products in the world that are sexy, Mac's are one of them (the iPod is the other).

The basis for your inane declaration is??? You failed to provide any basis for discussion and instead subjected the thread to inane ranting.
 
I have to support bwana here... there was not even the briefest hint of a factoid in all that.

I think I'd like the macbook pro but I can't really justify 17k for a laptop :D They sure are purty though.

AntiThesis : I always thought the MacBook Pro looked better in all photo's I had seen, but in real life, the MacBook is even sexier

On a side note, Apple IMC SA/ Core Group/whatever seems to be doing a pretty good job. When I finished Uni 2 years ago, almost noone was using laptops in lectures (except for those two guys. Every year seems to have them)
But according to my girlfriend, the amount of people with Laptops in lectures now in staggaring. And they are all white MacBooks

Trying to reason with a technology advisor who has difficulty using a web browser is a lost cause. Strangely he makes no mention at all of using any banking/billing/law software in his home office. sounds like he is the kind of person who is pissed off that the cup holders in his bmw and the wife's toyota are in different places!
 
Mac people are a bunch of funny revionist religious zealots not far from the Loonux lot much like the crazy Amiga crowd from many years ago.

Remember how they slammed Intel's slow old designs and sang the praises of the superior modern PowerPC G5 only for Jobs to admit on how much Intel kicked their little ghey butts that they are now joining the dark side.

Suddenly everybody forgot about the boast of the PowerPC.

But with a declining 3% worldwide computer market share ... more hype and PR than they are worth but their MP3 player is rather nice I must admit.

The PC has won ... Windows has won ... over and out :).

And Mac share of computers sold worldwide is declining every year which is another fact.

There is nothing special about them really ... assembled in the very same factories in China by the same chaps (AsusTek) who also make the Dell and HP stuff from the same components.

What's so special about them now except being able to run the oddball OS X out of the box ???.

As for PowerPC, it is still great. Still pretty much amongst the best out there (even when compared to brand new chips such as Xeon). They just had heat issues which proved to be a problem in small form factors, which just happens to include all their current designs except for the PowerMac/MacPro

And yep, running OSX is more than enough reason to get a Mac.

And whilst they might be manufactured in the same factories, the design is by Apple. Hence the reason you see things like the MagSafe connector, magnetic lid, built in iSight, etc which Dell and HP do not have

Why always with the labeling Tibby?! Come on.. you can be less of a bigot than this! Its like me saying how Microsoft is designed for idiots, and allows stupid people online, but I wouldnt... thats an over genralization. I am sure there are smart people on Windows.

Mac now runs intel chipsets. The mac notebooks are ueber ueber sexy but come with that terrible OS that does all 5 things. My suggestion is to take it, format it, install Kubuntu... or if thats beyond you... Windows.

A friend I know runs Kubuntu on his new MAC notebook, and my word. Its a sexy machine with a sexy OS. He can dual boot into Windows should the need arise... but the dullness and klunkyness of MS is a pain, so he tends to stay in Kubuntu.

Who cares about market share? They're now worth more than Dell which has to be a bitter pill for Dell's CEO to swallow.

And what other os's? Windows and Linux are also running natively. Care to point out a triple booting PC to me running fully supported?

I'm not sure when you last looked at a mac but apart from the Pro's which are metal all the others are black or white. Anything to make colour an issue eh? :p
