Russian music download site sends defiant message to US

and we think we have problems.

imagine an entire country being kept out of the world trade organisation because one of your biggest economic rivals knows that you are going to take a lot of their business and make their cushy little lives....not so cushy anymore

i love africa

Bah. The US bullying again. Russian laws govern the site and as they say they pay taxes and royalties. If the US can't find better reasons than "They let allofmp3 run." then they're just quibbling.

Russia is better off not being in the WTO. The WTO doesn't benefit the majority of countries that belong to it, is one sided when it comes to American protectionism and has destroyed more developing markets than any other organisation in the last 40 years.

The world needs russia and all of its oil.

Anyway - if your stupid enough to actually pay for pirated music then good for you.

"They are concerned with making money for themselves not the artists. In our opinion, we and the artists are better off dealing directly with each other. In fact we believe it is the future of the music industry," they said.

And there you have it. Go allofmp3!!!

Way to go allofmp3.com

Anyway - if your stupid enough to actually pay for pirated music then good for you.

I think allofmp3.com is a brilliant experience. You get to download the catalogue and choose your files at your own pace. You get to choose the format and the bit rate, and how its organised when you download.
Theres no stupid DRM to worry about once you've got it, just use as if you had the CD.

But the most important feature is that its the right price. At $2-$4 an album there is no need to give it away... if your friend likes the song, he can damn well go and buy it for himself for the unholy price of $0.17 a track.

All online music stores should be like this, and they would be sell NAS-loads of the stuff all of the time.
I don't buy from Musica online or PicknPlay since they want me to jump thru hoops to get the music at the same price as a B&M store and they still claim that I don't really own it. Bugger that and their price labelling machines!

I'm buying all I can from the Ruskies before they fall victim to the side effects of nuclear trade policy!

Brilliant and convenient but you're still paying for pirated music. There is no difference than if had you downloaded if from a newsserver or via torrent - for free. Just because you're buying it doesnt make it legal.

If you dont want to give it to your friend then thats just silly. He's not gaining any security or piece of mind by buying it either.

To hell with the US. Its a fantastic site and you would think the plonkers driving the complaint would look at the business model and adapt.

**** RIAA and the US.

who says its pirated. they're paying royalties....the americans don't want to accept it
Royalties are supposed to be going to the artists and record companies - are they? Have the artists received any money? No.

Even if it is legal in Russia that has no baring outside of that country. Dagga is legalised in various countries does that mean you can import it to SA?

SA's copyright laws have been debated extensively on this forum. Many contend that the current legislation says if you download it for your personal use then it's not piracy. If that's the case then why pay for it??

simple_simon : If I take a copy of Adobe Photoshop and starts making millions of copies and start selling them at R10 a copy and offer to give Adobe R2 a copy, it is still pirating. The people buying it are just stupid enough to pay for pirated software.
The artists and record companies have categorically not given them permission to do this and if they start accepting allodmp3's pittance of a "royalty" then it adds legitimacy. So that it why they do not accept the token amount.
Make no mistake, you are paying for pirated music.

i think its entrepeneurial ..... its called supply and demand

people demand cheap music....they supply it. the gold price is not decided by the mining companies...its left to the market...why should this not be the case with music.

i feel a cd should sell for R50 max.

its unfortunate that music companies don't agree.....apparently cocaine is expensive

Its very different from trawling a newserver or torrent site.

Your claims of piracy are unfounded.
The site claims to operate under current legitimate Russian law, and under license.
The claims being made by the representatives of the license holders are being tested in court, but not yet proved. (And seem to be based on them changing their mind about having granted the license in retrospect.)

If at some time in the future the law changes, it still means that right now its legal.

If you dont want to give it to your friend then thats just silly. He's not gaining any security or piece of mind by buying it either.

No giving it to my friend would be piracy.;) As you should well know.
My comment was about how online music stores *should* be - prices so low that your friend would be ashamed to ask you to copy music that he could easily afford himself.

Prove me wrong then. Show me how they're complying with the current copyright law and how it has any legal basis in SA. Remember, the law changed back in Sept.

I've never had a corrupt or otherwise infected file from a news server.

Not so...

allofmp3 has a license to distribute music. There is a dispute between the issuers of that license and the site as to what the license allows them to do.

AFAIK they are using a license that is normally used to license broadcasters (radio stations). The law in Russia apperently does not prohibit them from using that license to resell the music, hence the dispute. And the court cases.
So far allofmp3 have won the court cases, but obviously the RIAA and others are still not happy and are lobbying the US government to protect their revenues.
If they accept the royalties from allofmp3 they will weaken their case.

Happy downloading.

I'm sorry... the onus is on *you* to prove me wrong. There is the little matter of the constituitional right of the presumption of innocence.:p

And I don't have random shutdown syndrome on my mac. But some people do.

Anything else?:)

BobJones : Just because you live in a country that allows you to make unlimited copies of Photoshop and then sell them for R10, doesn't mean it is not piracy or unethical. It just makes it legal in russia, but still unethical as it amounts to stealing. It is pirated music. They have no permission from the artists or the lables representing the artists to sell their music. Hence all the lawsuits

No... they have a license. They have a dispute with the license issuer. In fact they were busy renegotiating the terms of the licenses recently... apparently it did not go well.:)
You make think it is unethical, but it really just business. The license holders made a bad deal, and now they want to get out of it, and name calling is one of the ways they want to help them to do that.

Are you really saying that if I go to a hash coffee shop in Amsterdam, have a joint and come back to SA, I should feel bad 'cuz I acted unethically, since it is illegal here?
