a good alternative to a data card is the motorola v360, goes for about R779 at hi-fi corp, it is edge enabled although it is a bit of a bugger to set up.
and it can be charged through a usb cable.

I'd much rather buy the motorola if I were greggpb - much better value for money and, as far as I am aware, there won't be a significant difference in connection speed.

You can use the R1 000 you save to buy yourself a useful 2GB worth of airtime... yum

But if you ever want to wack a voda or mtn sim in for 3G or HSDPA....you can.

If you really want to, yes. Personally I wouldn't ever want to pay R2/MB when I can pay 75% less, but that's just me. :-)

how would one go about setting it up, and what would a person need?

I'm using the V360 as a GPRS/Edge modem while travelling and it works great. You need to get a mini-USB cable (the type that usually comes with digital cameras), then download the USB drivers from http://www.motomodders.net (you'll have to register :-( or visit www.bugmenot.com for a login), Once connected, set the dialup number to *99#, change the modem init string to +CGDCONT=1, "IP", "vdata" and dial up.

I bought a datacard on the expansys website while travelling in the UK (www.expansys.co.uk) and paid about 54 pounds delivered to my hotel for a new Vodaphone Option 3G card (not HSPDA but includes WLAN). The card was brand new and not locked. My father is using it now with a Vodacom 4U contract with databundles loaded. It is much faster with 3G than the slow GPRS with Cell C-Virgin in our area and work out at 64c a MB with the 250MB 3G bundle. Interesting is that this is all he pay per month - R160 for the data.

On the bidorbuy website a company from overseas advertise datacards delivered in SA for about R1000.

Hi

Just bought myself the Hauwei E220 usb modem from Vodaworld in Midrand. Works like a bomb! Has a memory chip on it and automagically installs on winbugs machines. Also works on Linux and Applemac with a bit off fiddling. Works on my powerbook :)

Figure rather invest in this now(R2598) as it supports all transmission rates HSDPA,3G,Edge,gprs and gsm. Using it with Virgin as its unlocked :D. Anyways you have the convenvience of not having to lug a cd around with you for install, have a bluetooth enabled laptop, or pcmcia slot or converter.

Works for me!

Also consider MTN datacard (same Huawei E620 as Vodacom, except that it is shipped without external antenna). Mine was R50 per month x 24 on Mycall100. Works with MTN, Vodacom, CellC. Should work with VirginMobile 128k SIM, but not with 64k SIM.
