087 from a Landline or cell?

So does anyone know what the costs to a 087 number from my land line or a cell phone would be?

I think this is a great service, Free calls from a 087 to a 087 (PC to PC) cheap calls to a land line overseas and also to a cell phone (Peak hours only).

The nice one is that anyone can call a 087 number from a land line to my PC ;) NICE. Costs????? Please tel me... Someone..... Telkom???? Anyone???
 
Excuse my ignorance, but what is this 087 thing?
 
The 087 numbers was introduced a long time ago to be used with VOIP systems or something. But afaik there were still interconnection problems that made these numbers useless.
efons where did you see/read about this?

Telfree.co.za seems to have these 087 numbers. Still not sure if it 'works', or how. Go take a look there.
 
I just tested out Telfree.co.za and got my own 08775 number. This number worked from my Vodacom number and I even used it to dail out to a Telkom&Vodacom number. Does not work from any other network as MTN. They have a interconnect with Telkom and Vodacom only.
 
Although ICASA allocated a whole load of VoIP Providers blocks of 087 numbers, this doesn't mean that they're automatically reachable from all networks.

These VoIP Providers still have to negotiate interconnects with all other providers, including Telkom, MTN, CellC, Vodacom, and all the other VoIP Providers.

Needless to say, progress with getting interconnect agreements in place with Telkom have been slow...

Nice. Now did you get the costs. ;)

Telfree say that they don't know the costs as yet as ICASA have not yet given them the costs (retail price) or something...

Were you happy with the service. Better or worse than skype?
 
I just signed up for the 087 numbers, and got it, seems nice and all, but my cellphone keeps saying Network Busy when I try call it.

OK So what are the Costs to a 087 Number from a...

Yes can anyone tel me what the costs from a telkom Land line to a 087 number?

So far it seems to work from a telkom number and a Vodacom number BUT not MTN etc.....

So there is a subscription of R29 per month. That means for R29 I have a 0877 number that anyone can call. FREE from another 0877 number or at a cost from a Telkom line or Vodacom LINE.

Quality seems to be good (The little I tested) Better than skype.

R29 a month and I can tel Telkom now to get lost and save quite a bit (My Broadband is Iburst). Well not quite as MTN, Cell C and I am sure Virgin Subscriber will not be able to call me. OH Well. Telkom it is (if they don't steal my lines again). :eek:

I love it :)

I'm not sure why some people are having problems with the system but an 087 number is the best thing to have, quality can beat skype any day.

The way I see it skype is just a toy, if you want a real phone, which just so happens to have many more features than a skype or any other VoIP service in this country then get an 087 number. Marc Roberson from Talk.com helped me with anything I wanted and the after sale service was the best I have ever recieved.

I can take my vodacom cellphone and phone a VoIP phone with quality that beats helkom even :) for anyone who isn't happy with it i highly recommend contacting Marc. I didn't think of Spam so just contact telfree if you decide to find out more amd im sure they can help you out with his email, or just contact me :)

I have tried lots of different VoIP services but thats all they are, they don't have phone numbers.

Hope this changes your mind about an 087 number.

Oh, by the way... This pm did in fact convey some 'good' news to me. My oh so wonderful 087 number will be able to work/interact etc etc with ANY network in like 2 weeks time!!!!

But the question now is, is R29 per month worth this?

No I am not an alterego of Marc unless I have multiple personalitys :)

I just dont understand why people are not liking the service, it does have a few bumps but so did cellphones when they first came out. I'm a patient man so look it doesn't bother me and I am on vodacom so that is working, I can phone home. I admit if I was on mtn I wouldn't be so happy but in time I'm sure it will work

There are VoIP Providers around the world that will provide you with a dial-in number.
I have 3 UK geographic phone numbers, 2 UK VoIP numbers, an Irish Geographic number, and an Irish VoIP Number. (And a number in Washington, that I haven't even bothered configuring)

There are other providers in South Africa that can do the same.
Telfree aren't the only providers that have been allocated 087 Numbers. All the other Internet Telephony Service Providers in South Africa are also waiting for interconnect agreements with the other Telco's.
Some will even provide you with a Geographic number, like an 011 or 021.

Just remember, it all relies on your Internet Connection.
 
I am looking for one in south africa though for quality purposes. Are there others, in south africa that provide you with a number??
