Hey all, im wondering if anyone on here is intrested in creating/joining a community wireless network in Pretoria East.

We need people in the following areas:

Faerie Glen
Garsfontein
Menlopark
Lynnwood
Wilgers
Murrayfield
Meyerspark

or any close by area i havent mentioned :)

Most links will be short distance (<3km), which means you wouldnt need expensive equipment.

You'll be able to get away with,

1.12dBi YAGI antenna (R250+-)
2.PCI wireless adapter (R250+-)
3.LMR400 cable and connectors (R200+-)

When choosing a PCI adapter, make sure its power output is 32mW (15dBm) or higher, also make sure it has a SMA connector for external antennas.

The maximum length i recommend for the LMR400 cable, from your pc to the antenna is 8m. You can go abit longer, it might just work.

This setup would be able to create a 11mbps link, with 1ms latency over a distance of about 3km. I have done it.

So lets put our unused pci cards to good use :D

yes, its called PWP (see www.pwp.za.net), but it doesnt have any active users in the areas i mentioned.
The only active PWP nodes are in Centurion/Lyttleton/Irene it seems.

We should first gather enough users in the areas i mentioned, then we could link up with the rest of PWP. If we dont get any people in those areas, this isnt going to happen soon.

Network is up and running:D
Anyone's welcome to join the fun.

Estimated coverage:

  • Menlopark (partially)
  • Faerie Glen
  • Garsfontein
  • Constantia Park
  • Menlyn
  • Newlands
  • Waterkloof Ridge/Heights/etc
  • Meyerspark
  • La Montagne
  • Brummeria
  • Val De Grace
  • Murrayfield
  • Die Wilgers
  • Lynnwood
  • Equestria

Coverage is probably alot wider, these are just some of the areas i can think of right now.

Battlefield2 + FTP servers will be running soon ;)

If you need help connecting to the network, please contact us, we will try our best to get you connected ASAP.

Goodluck.

Anyone with second hand wifi kit they want to get rid of?

Enclosures,antennas, routers, radios, pcmcia's, cables,connectors,etc.

Perhaps ex-megawan or wisp users would still have some?

Please "private message" me with a list of the stuff you want to sell, and we can negotiate a price.

Hi.
Me and a couple of my buddies tried to setup something similar a while back in some of the areas you mentioned, but due to a lack of time we didn't get real far, we still have some of our kit. Sounds like time to dust off the old ap's , antennas and stuff.

I have 2 18dbi flat panels and a smc router, its a little crappy no client mode :( will have to get a nice linksys or some thing.

Will checkout your website for more info, hope to see you online soon! ;)

You can try our forums:

www.ptawug.za.net

If you send your google earth coordinates, we can confirm if you have LoS or not :)

If you are in Val de Grace, chances are pretty good :P
