Hi Guys,

I got my first ever Mac this week! It's a G4 Mac Mini - got a really nice deal on old stock....

My only problem is the very limited disc space. Has anyone here tried replacing the disc with a bigger (than 80GB) notebook disc? Does it work?

Thanks

No reason for it not to work - here's a guide to help you on your way - http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/Mac/Mac-Mini/Hard-Drive

But, why not use an external firewire drive? That's the route I've chosen - 500gb Seagate tucked away behind the tv. :)

bwana, only one FireWire port (for the iSight :-)

Actually the Mac Mini was bought because it's portable to a degree - I already have an external (FireWire) drive for my notebook (with ext3 fs), I don't want to have to drag another one around for the Mini.

The other reason I bought the Mini is to get to know OSX Server, and also to use it as a cheaper (and bucketloads more powerful) replacement for the usual mini-ITX based embedded computers.

My intel one only has one port too but you can daisy chain until the cows come home so I plug my iSight into the back of my hdd enclosure.

Hope you're enjoying it. :D

Oh right, I didn't think of that. Pity the iSight doesn't come in USB.

Actually I'm looking at a Logitech webcam. Still trying to decide which one and looking for compatibility info - it needs to work in OSX and Linux...

I must say, I'm just blown away by this little machine in general. The OS is everything I expected it to be and more. And the Mini performs far better than I expected. Worth every penny...

Now I'm just itching more to get a MBP...

LandyMan, I want the Core 2 Duo! Actually I'd consider a good secondhand G4 too if the price is right.

bwana, I'm not dismissing the iSight. It's just a tad expensive and too big to my taste.

Anyone know of any deals of any kind on at the moment? Not everywhere stocks MAC and the pricing seems pretty uniform. I am looking for a macBook and Mac Mini but I am open to good offers for older MAC products...Anyone have any ideas?

Two macs now? :D

Hehe, you seem to be the guardian of this forum :)

Well i need to upgrade my current desktop as well,, before the poor thing dies on me. Would never have thought of going MAC but the Mini in the shop was just so small and sexy i couldn't resist....

I got one a couple months ago and have been pretty much impressed by it. Plus it's an awesome addition to my home entertainment system :D

You have all the Mac stuff there is?!

How much you pay for it? Normal retail?
Not that much apple stuff. A powerbook, an ibook and the mini. I'm supposed to order a macbook pro this week but I havent decided which one yet.

I've been a mac user since the mid 90's but I've always kept a windows box around. With the mini (and my xbox360) I dont have to worry about doing that anymore. :D

I got them all online - the mini and powerbook from amazon.com and the ibook from zastore - unless youre planning a trip to the states or know someone who is zastore will be as good a place as any for you.
