Did anyone receive these from a South African retailer yet?
I ordered from the Zastore site after I called them, they said I should order everything on their site and only arange payment when they called me and confirm when they get their stock. It is almost 2 weeks now and everytime I called it is "we will receive it soon". Will I get it before xmas, otherwise does anyone know how to procure a MBP core 2 in a short while?

@dotcat: Glossy? Is that your preference?
I don't like the glossy ones. They look like cheap @ss Fujitsu Siemens machines :p

All the Apple stores have them

Played with a Fujitsu with a glossy screen last week, and the image seems crisper and richer, but there were a lot of reflections even in low light conditions. It was really bad when it was bright.
Don't think I'll be going for glossy anytime soon.

I was playing around with a MB that had a glossy screen - really was not impressed.
Given the choice I'd go for matt any day. Still, if it suits your needs and the environment (lighting) then go for it if thats what you prefer. :)

Well - I first have to compare them side by side - only then will I be able to make an informed decision. Thats what my visit to the regents street apple store will be for.

Too bad you're buying in the UK - they're pretty pricey there too. Got time for a quick trip across the pond to NY? :)
17" MBP from Amazon.com (USA) - $2,799.00 (£1415.00)
17" from Apple UK - £1,899.00 ($3,757.00)
For 400 squid I'd make the trip - it would pay for itself! :D

Apple usually waits for their old stock to be depleted before ordering new stock. hence their 'waiting for shipment' story.

Does anyone have the Istore in Menlyn's contact details? Directory service is useless as they are mostly anyway.

I've read you will have less problems with the latest production models. Some MBPs do strange things like turn themselves off or make wheezing noises. Seems the Chinese are still learning about QC ;)

Please elaborate on these problems, cuz the only problems that you *may* be refering to is the "moo" and RSS, but they both affected mostly MacBooks.
I don't know of RSS being a problem with MBP's at all.
BTW just got a mail from Apple IMC/Core offering 25%/15% off a mac if I own a PPC mac. Can anyone say C2D?

Unfortunately we don't have much in PE - hasnt dissuaded the hillbillies from invading though. I have to wonder what it would take!

Random Shutdown Syndrome... last I heard they were swopping out logic boards and heatsinks for some of the aflicted MacBooks.

AFAIK the MBP uses the T-series processors (at 667). Aren't the E-series processors for desktops?
I haven't heard of RSS being a problem in the C2D macbooks.

Perhaps you need to check your hearing (LOL only kidding ;))
I read also they are replacing that idiot Matsu s h i t a Superdrive with an LG Hitachi unit.
Out goes the MAT S U S H I T A DVD-R UJ-857 in comes the HL-DT-ST DVDRW GWA4080MA.
Now if they could just do the same with the iMac. Hell, Apple owners have been screaming about this drive for months and months.

I have the UJ-846 in my mini - is that a problematic drive?

I can't fault LG's drives, but what's so bad about the Matsu****a? I have a UJ-840D in my HP notebook, and that's about the only part of the HP, aside from the lovely LGPHILIPS (??) screen, that I can't complain about. It's bullet proof, reads anything I throw at it.

Reminds me - I wanted to test out the dual layer writing but the blanks we're over r50 a pop and I could only find packs of 5.
Now while I dont mind losing r50 in the name of curiosity I'm not in the mood to piss away r250 incase it doesnt work
Has anyone tried d/l - esp in a mini?

oh right. I just remembered, I found Imation DVD+RW DL at CNA in Cresta not too long ago - was pretty cheap too. I used it for to make a copy of my (purchased) SUSE 10.1 DVD for office use. So far no complaints.

Hey man, I've got to earn money somehow! Business before pleasure....
For what it's worth, after three years of dedication, I finally have my boss playing with the idea of getting himself a Mac.

lol. I'll have to give credit where credit is due. My boss plays BackGammon.
Anyway, he wants a small notebook, preferrably a 12" - now, there's this 12" G4 Powerbook on display at a certain shop, that I would very much like to buy for myself before my boss buys it for himself...

It's only an inch and change larger but worth the extra size imo.

That's precisely what the current UJ doesn't do. Endless problems is how it has been described. Mind you they say the new one is louder, but reads all the discs.

Incredible Con? They seem to make a point of being the most expensive shop in town - esp for software. Flight SIM X DLux =R499, but 399 at CNA, even less at Look & Listen.

bwana - thanks, I'll tell him about that. Don't thin he wants to wait that long though - his HP is dying.
Skeptik, Incredible Corruption is sometimes cheap with blank discs. Sometimes cheaper than any other place (at least in Cresta). But that's about all they're good for.

They did suggest I try makro for a single dvd dl +r so all hope is not lost :)
