Mine:

ODI:

1. Sachin Tendulkar
2. Adam Gilchrist
3. Brian Lara (Captain)
4. Jacques Kallis
5. Kevin Pietersen
6. Andrew Flintoff
7. Justin Kemp
8. Shaun Pollock
9. Shane Warne
10. Brett Lee
11. Makaya Ntini

Maybes: Ricky Ponting, Chris Gayle

Tests:

1. Virender Sehwag
2. Matthew Hayden
3. Ricky Ponting (Captain)
4. Rahul Dravid
5. Kevin Pietersen
6. Jacques Kallis *
7. Mark Boucher
8. Shaun Pollock
9. Brett Lee
10. Shane Warne
11. Makaya Ntini

* Kallis is out of position, but this way he has a more all rounder job, while the specialist batsmen can lay a very good platform
Maybe swap Dravid & Ponting if one of the openers is out early

Maybes: Sachin Tendulkar, Brian Lara (amazingly, but I went on current form and season averages, but Dravid just scored more prolifically)

Jonty everything looks okay. But Sewag opening in tests?
For the world 11? comon..I'd definately replace him with Tendulkar, even tho he would be outa position. Sewag doesnt even deserve to play for the Indian team let alone the world eleven....Theyre thinking of dropping him.

And no chance id put mark boucher in the test team. Theres a bit of bias there since you're a south african. Kumar sangakarra gets my vote for the keeper position. His batting is almost as good as any in the world and his keeping is just as good as Boucher.

And no glen Mcgrath? IMHO hes probably in the top 3 for the best EVER bowlers... Id put him in both teams even if he was 40yrs old.

Also Hussey hes insanely good and he has my vote for both teams.

Murali has to be on the fringe too. You probably dont need Makhaya and lee in the same team... play murali and warne... lol that would be a wonderful sight to see them bowling together, anywhere in the world except South Africa where the ball hardly turns an inch.

But the rest all looks good............

I wonder if they will ever have that rest of the world v australia series again
It has potential even tho australia thumped them last time

Sehwag is going through a bit of a slump (Smith is going through much worse for SA, but he's still there) - a top batsman with huge talent. Have you seen how close his technique is to that of Sachin? Sachin fails as an opener (it's been tried a few times and I believe his average was around 8 in 10 matches). He doesn't like the new ball and prefers going after the older ball, so it would be way out of position for him.

Can't compare sewag to sachin.Techniques are nothing similar. Tendulkar is one of the best the world has ever seen. (probably in the top 5 greatest ever, Bradman, Viv richards, lara, loyd and tendulkar..)... Ponting's getting there but hasnt achieved nearly as much as what tendulkar has.

Sewag doesnt move his feet one inch. He gets out every time against a quality attack with the new ball. He could be classed in the same league as ganguly but hes no where near tendulkar esp in tests....Dont forget, tendulkar was UNDOUBTABLY the best batsmen in the world for almost 5 years in the late ninties and early 2000's. Hes taken warne and macgrath apart on fast bouncy moving australian wickets which No1 else has managed to do. Only lara from this generation is on anequal keel with him.

Sewag used to have a similar technique but now he jst stands and wafts his bat....
And tendulkar is way better at playing the new ball than sehwag..India jst want to protect tendulkar and play him at no.4 cos hes the best batsmen they have.

Jonty,

Great teams. In the One Day side I'd have Ponting in place of Lara (as capt also) and Gayle in place of Tendulkar. Admittedly it's a very, very close call.

As for the Test team, as much as I like Bouch, I think Gilcrest should be there knowing the Aussies' abilty to score at 4 + an over, which wins them most of their test matches. Oh yeah and Tendulkar in place of Sewag.

I have not used stats to make this call, only personal preferance.

kallis scores to slowly - so i would def. not put him in any one day games.

would have macgrarth in both test and one dayers.

drop kemp from one dayers

drop boucher from test.

You simply cannot ignore hussey, this guy is a scoring machine, much like peterson, both exceptional (not your average) players. Cricketing Averages are getting higher, and certaintly hussey is apart of this.

drop ntini from test & ODI, actaully the only south african test player, would be , actually might only be kallis... still pondering on him...

Lara def not captain of one dayers. - Ponting captain of both forms
Lets do murili for ODI & warne for test - these 2 guys take the spinners role.

Please note that this is my incomplete and partial/bias selection.

totally disagee - just look at the current stats. Also perhaps another way to compare the 2 is 2 have alook just at their away stats, but your comment on tendulkar being way better is way out.

Jonty just to prove you wrong (love doing that :D ) and show you werent talking the truth...

Hes only played once as opener and scored 15... and you cant say one of the greatest players ever is vulnerable against the new ball....

Tendulkars average by batting position:

Opening 1 0 0 0 15 15 15.00
No. 3
No. 4 170 19 32 30 *248 8582 56.83
No. 5 19 0 5 3 169 1082 56.95
No. 6 19 3 4 2 *148 731 45.69
No. 7 4 0 0 0 41 117 29.25
No. 8
No. 9
No. 10
No. 11
Overall 213 22 41 35 *248 10527 55.12

Like boodles team. Definately hussey and mcgrath.. Would have sangakkara instead of bouch... only thing different is I would play both murali and warne depending on the pitch.. And have either ntini or brett lee.

Ok, I was off on his stats as an opener, but an ave of 15 is far worse than his middle order averages.....

okay boodles u dissapont me.. as i was typing i liked ur team and i saw ur last post after i posted... :)

Cant believe any one would even start comparing the two..
the ones record and technique against QUALITY bowling is way better. Sewhag looks more exciting but put him against a Mcgrath or Pollock or Lee or asif on a moving pitch and he always fails..

@jony: 1 innings doesnt tell you anything.. Tendulkar is better against the new ball period..... hes more technically adept even tho he cant hit as much as sehwag. Kinda similar comparing kallis with gibbs... but maybe even more of an exaggeration cos gibbs isnt all that bad

proves my point doesnt it? you cant even compare sehwag and tendulkar

Ic boodles theres been a misunderstaning. You thought i was talking abt ponting and tendulkar. If u read up in more detail, i was talking abt sewag and tendulkar.

I definately agree that in the last 2 to 3 yrs pontings been light years ahead of tendulkar. But overall i think tendulkar edges ponting slightly...
but right now no doubt i would have ponting at 1 and hussey at 2 in the world for test batting

Pontings a run machine at the moment....Esp in ODI's and in big matches... he scores huge runs and hes scary

jontyB
20-12-2006, 03:09 PM
I'd say Ponting has a good chance to overtake Tendulkar. In any case, all in good fun. My team will whip yours when we play at Newlands.

rendan
20-12-2006, 03:15 PM
I donno abt that theyre almost the same age and Tendulkar has 1200 more runs...But hes way more valuable a player than Tendulkar is now. in both versions of the game

But remember tendulkar in the late ninties? he was scary.

jonty no chance ur team will beat mine... I think australia have the best pitches that assist both fast bowling and spin so if the match is held in sydney or melbourne and both murali and warne are playing with pollock and mcgrath... my team will rip ur team to pieces :P

DUDE!!!
Im talking abt sewhag and tendulkar

Not ponting and tendulkar

DO
U
UNDERSTAND??

Unless your telling me that sehwag and tendulkar are as good as eachother, we have nothing to argue about

I agree Ponting is better than tendulkar now in both forms of the game.....

Test stats Mat I NO Runs HS Ave 100 50 Ct St Team
Mike Hussey 14 24 6 1554 182 86.33 5 8 6 - AUS

Hussey's current 14 test matches has given him an ave 86.33, with 5 hundreds, and 8 fifties. Highest score of 182. There has to be a place for this guy in the tests, his current form is awsome, and probably has not been matched by anyone (except bradman) for the 14 matches he has played.

He will get Warne's test record before he does tho. He is 2 years younger that Warne ...I think. Murali will be 35 next year and surely can go on for a few more years. Problem is he plays both forms of the game and when he decides to ditch one dayers, it will prolong his test career.

I really don't know where you get off picking Virender Sehwag over Greame Smith. As for Shaun Pollock, I wouldn't pick him because he is too slow both as a bowler and in the field, I would go for Ntini or Steyn. And where in goodness name is the name of AB de Villiers in your squads both test and ODI. Murali and Warne you gotta be kidding. I would only pick Warne.
You don't need all that spin bowlers in a world team!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
