Hotspot Software?

Does anyone know what type of software does Telkom, ISP’s and Hotspots use to control the users download and upload rate and cap to limit the total traffic used by a customer.

It’s going to be used to manage hotspots

I’ve already tried dozens of programs, but nothing work in the combination I want to use, so can somebody help me?
 
Use sputnik.

I have it installed on a wrt54GL linksys router. If you get dd-wrt and flash it with it, you should be ready to go in no time.
 
I’ve got a Linksys WRT54GS router “in use”

and a Mecer 54mbps 802.11g router “piece of %^#” not is use it over heats and crash basically it disconnect my wireless pc and then I must reset “pull the plug out and back again ever time it happens.

So my Linksys router is the best.

I’ve already checked out at that firmware upgrades. But I’m scared it’s going to mess up my Router.

I’ve already tried almost all the software in the world but something work 100% correct

2hotspot resets my pc and give me errors like hell

So basically I just want to find usable software to install between my high speed connection and to all my access points

I’ve got a server ready for that, 2 LAN cards also build in. I’m testing almost everyday all the software out but nothing works in the combination’s of Bandwidth and Traffic Quota.
 
no chillispot runs from a cd, so you'll need a pc. mikrotik is the way to go, i've set up a few hotspots with it, and it works like a dream. the guys from Snowball ISP in Stellenbosch run almost everything on Mikrotik.

Some confusing answers for sure...

Mikrotik: - Hardware and Software... endless possibilities!

Chillispot: - Captive Portal software, straight and simple but not complete:

For either of the above you'll need:

Billing platform (e.g. Skyrove/Sputnik/2hotspot etc): - Takes care of the billing, credit card payments etc. You sign up, set up Chillispot, Mikrotik, Linksys etc.

With Skyrove you receive a monthly payment (70% revenue share) and your clients can use their credits at any Skyrove hotspot (http://map.skyrove.com). You also don't need to speak to them, register them, or in any way try and get money from them yourself.

Not true... Chillispot CAN run on a PC, but you don't need one.

It's available as a module on OpenWRT and is pre-configured on DD-WRT.

I've also seen Chillispot run as a module on Mikrotik Routerboards (though setting it up on the 112 is a bit more tricky)

Either way, Chillispot is only half the solution. More about Chillspot on Linksys routers.
 
a decent mikrotik setup can handle all aspects of a hotspot, user registrations, payments, monitoring, you name it. all in one timy little black box. all you need on client side is an adsl line and router.
 
You may be able to get an all-in-one black box solution going with a Mikrotik but unless you have one or two very close friends who are going to be dedicated patrons of your hotspot then there is really no viable business case for going it alone.

You will have much bigger success joining one of the hotspot networks. Then you get exposure and cross usage from other hotspots. You also have billing and other headaches largely outsourced and you can concentrate on other things.
 
yes sure, but you have to share revenue. mikrotik can be remotely admin'ed, and paid for on a "call out" basis. these babies run so stable it's unbelievable. WISP use them in outdoor installations for huge networks with pretty complicated routing setups. and they do NOT disappoint. For around R8000 including installation by a pro you're set. and then it's yours.

PS. Trust me, you don't want to run a bussiness component/critical service like this on your old 486. imagine the downtime.

But at the end of the day it's about using the right solution for the right problem.

I.e. don't sweep a carpet with a bulldozer...

R8000 is also pretty expensive if you compare it with getting a Linksys WRT54GL router for ~R800 (retail) and joining Fon, Sputnik or Skyrove.

Thats a beeeeg price shift.
 
We use Mikrotik Routerboards for all our wireless needs. We currently have 12 of them. Not to sure where you get the R8000 price tag from though. We have 2 of them set up as hotspots, and all I can say is they work like a dream. At the end of the day they might save you allot of slepping. And dont even get me started on the reliability. We have them set up on a 6Km wireless link and no down time to date.

Apologies - that will teach me for blindly quoting from other posts. Looked at my price list and its closer to the R2000 - R3000 mark for retail (depending on the configuration)

Would definitely not use anything less than a Mikrotik for long range links :D

But unless you putting up a hotspot in an airport (or running an illegal WISP :( )- I don't think the current market warrants the kind of price of Mikrotik stuff for the relative usage that you will get at the average hotspot.
 
Suppose it all boils down to perfrence. A VW vs. Porche debate :)
